Scania Fuel Gauges

Hi all wondering if anyone elses Scania has a fuel guage with a mind of its own?

Just got the keys to a 60 reg Scania R440 and got a 300 litre tank either side (no adblue FTW!) and on my Stralis with a 600 litre tank could do two trips of about 1100k’s on about 380 litres.

The Scania does the same, but, using 380 litres puts the gauge at the beginning of the red bar! Wondering if it’s the unit that’s faulty or is it a Scania trait that they like to scare you into running out of fuel? 220 litres supposedly left in the tanks but how low can it go on the needle?

Many thanks

Stu

p.s.

Gear changes, running with empty stillages the ■■■■ thing still changes from 12 to 11, when there is no need… again is this a ‘TADS’ scenario for the classic opticruise gearbox?

opticruise is crap mate ive got a r480 on a 57 n thats the same its terrible when the gearbox is cold crunches when going down the box basically bangs itself into gear

Thought all scania fuel gauges were like that

fuel feeds from 1 tank to the other sender unit only in 1 tank so make sure fuel is feeding over and isn’t air locked i had a problem with a 58 plate

There’s still 1/3rd of a tank left when you get to the red or about 200 litres. It’s to stop drivers running out of fuel. The guage drops quicker when it’s full and slower when it nears the bottom. Knock the gearbox in to manual mode once you’re on the limiter then it can’t change down.

If you can only fill one tank, make sure it’s the one that says “fill this tank first” or if you run with that empty and the other one full you can get air in the system rendering the one tank useless like chap above said. don’t think it matters if you’re filling both which one you fill first as long as you don’t run the engine.

Ah so it seems they are the usual traits of the motor then, good to know though. But yeah i did notice the first half of the guage went down quicker then led baloon and then didn’t move much.

But interesting about the fuel tanks because on mine i have to fill the right tank first, and the other two 08/59 reg Scanias we have it’s the left. Getting a feeling the driver who had it before me filled the left tank first like on the others :frowning:

Better keep an eye on it then, maybe get it checked out with Scania…

Hi

re. gear changes, opticruise it trying to get the best fuel economy so on the flat will go to top as soon as it can, the ECU cannot see the road ahead so when you come to a slight incline the engine speed drops slightly and it reacts by dropping one gear (one split on a manual) then the engine speed is in the middle of the green band ready to tackle the hill, as said it doesn’t know its only a slight incline so when road levels out again it goes back to top. These do this solo as well, which is a little annoying.

Nowt to do with the gearbox. That’s a typical double shifted Clarkes motor that’s had abuse from the day Robert bought it…

A family friend of mine had a 4 series with the problem so when i went with him in the school holidays we ‘ran out’ of fuel a couple of times even though there was still 1/4 tank in the second one. Once we made it to 20ft from the pump

Yes mine does this too, unfortnately when it as built the N/S 200l tank was removed (for weight)leaving me with just a 300l which doesn’t take long to get to th point where it looks like it’ll need filling soon.

Have 2 for 400 Litre tanks on my 08, and it seems to have the same trait…
I can do a 600k trip without the needle moving, then on the second trip it will go down quite quick… In fact so quick that you feel like you are going to run out… Get to the pumps to find about a quarter in each tank… Still better safe than sorry…

As for the opti cruise, I do find that the 56 reg I drove crunched whilst changing between gears… It failed me in the end at Chepstow going up the hill…

On this one it seems okay but does have the occasional crunch…

I try and keep the fuel low in our 11 plate 440 scanias as the extra weight does it no favours on hills!
seriously tho are the new scanias all gutless? even empty there pretty embarassing on hills :frowning:

total madness, your 11 platers won’t have run in yet they’ll still be tight, you’ll probably see an improvement when they loosen off a bit …they do feel gutless because all the torque comes at low revs(1000-1300 rpm) if your used to revving the nuts off an engine to get to where you are going it is quite strange. if you have opticruise it feels like it changes up too soon, if you have a stick try changing up earlier than you are used to

Thanks Bagnall3150,
They have no stick so I assume they are opticruise, (a bit like a twist and go mo-ped)!!
and strangly enough they do seem to be getting better everyday!
Thanks for the advice
