Why do they all sound like a plumbers tool box rattling away , what is so good about them being in the so called top of the range?
If you hear one start on a cold morning, it sounds like its having a heart attack and going to blow up ?
Give me a proper truck, an Erf Olympic cab or Volvo FL 10 Wendy house .
Or an Iveco 360 Turbostar or a Pegaso.
“Proper trucks” aren’t made any more.
You have to manage with all the modern crap unless you can find a firm that likes to run older tackle.
Plus side is you can’t go into London.
I’m not a big scania fan but the V8 is probably one of the best heavy truck engines ever made. Old tech but they just keep going.
my v8 is just shy of 2m km

A mate of mine has an old 04 plate 4 series, similar sort of mileage (no ones sure of the exact figure as it’s had 4 Tacho heads at least) it’s still in daily use on heavy distance work often running day and night with 2 drivers. It was a 480 but has been tinkered with and will run no bother loaded with his 620’s and it just won’t die. Excellent engines.

As I’m only 29 Im pretty happy to say I’ve driven ERF, and Foden, you actually drive them compared to newer wagons… I have a 2012 fh12 now and I’d have that foden with a cat engine back tomorrow! Don’t think many youngsters will ever get to drive them.

Was that the 380 CAT Foden & 16 box alpha?
They share one thing with the Iveco Eurotechs from yore, get beside one when its ticking over and it’ll have you choking/hurling on the fumes in seconds, how come with all the emissions ■■■■■■■■?
In contrast my bloody MAN isn’t going to win any prizes, but you could live inside the exhaust pipe.
And if we’re picking our next motors, i’ll have a Sed Ack with a ■■■■■■■■ ta…well actually anything bar the electronic rubbish that’s now made, drove a 65 plate CF last week, Jesus Wept, there is nothing i can say nice about the heap.
Been in a CF for a week, saying that mine is under powered is a woeful understatement!
And I’m speed limited to 50 adding insult!

That’s not a truck, it’s ■■■■■■■ donkey!

Fuse 21 (I think) cures that. But that was an early cf in my day.
Anyway. Back to Scania topic & their V8’ s. On a teck note, I hear they’ve put all the drive train for the inlets / outlets valves to the back of the block .
There again, had a job last week; guy wanted to salvage the engine / transmission out of a Saab 900 turbo. … Gearbox front of the engine■■?.. What ever next?
Go stand next to a Volvo FH. Sounds like its running with no oil.
I reckon the Actros sounds like an old Hoover twin tub washing machine of yesteryear.[emoji3]
R420 sounds like they blow up when starting and idle rough as hell. They hump MAN 440s though. Then again anything can hump an MAN 440. What a gutless engine they have.

My god damoq ,you never insulted the poor CF for once
.or is it the beer ive had
We have scania 480s, mine has done over 900k on an 11 plate and still sounds fine our older 480 on a 59 plate with 500k sounds like a bag of crap morning noon and night, it flies and is manual, but so does my auto, but sounds better

I’m 38 and have driven various old Fodens and ERFs and a really hope I never ever do again. Give me a brand new FH any day. But then I’ve never been one for rose tinted glasses

No it was a 450 cat, but yes a Alpha
My point is I think newbies have missed out, you pass your test and get given a new shiny scania/Merc/volvo etc, they’ll never get chance to drive what I class as a proper wagon… (my opinion)
