Scania, as good as they used to be?

We had a scania 141. Air con was a flap on the floor which let the mozies in.
We are very spoilt nowadays. If trucks came with every extra you could think of, We would still find fault.

As for the comment about not being able to see out of the windscreen when the sun comes out as you like your chair high. I’ve had the same problem in my old daf. But i came up with a solution.
My chair kept leaking and i kept repairing. Every time i repaired a pipe another one would burst about 2 weeks later, So i disconected it and it was left in the low position. Now i can pull the visor halfway down and still see out of the windscreen. Bloody arse hurts though.

In 1985 I was an owner driver and approached scania in Renfrew to quote me for one vehicle I was trading in a 2 year old DAF 2800 because it had high mileage, I wanted the new scania for my new partnership with a few firms in the south, I was refused a demo and didnt even get a quote ! I went to the dealership and again asked for a quote which I never received, I then went to ERF had a quote in 24 hours and a Demo without any problem, scania were not interested but the new partnership I was a shareholder in was NIGHTFRIEGHT now one of MAN/ERF biggest customers. Peter Ross was the salesman at the time and now a scania director and I dont let them forget. Over the years I have purchased many commercial vehicles but never a scania. Good product yes but they used to pick and choose customers, another one of there biggest customers when they started in Renfrew walked away after many years to Volvo because of there attitude.

They are a huge step backwards, especially the opticruise transmission. It really does have a mind of it’s own and when fully freighted( 41000 litres of motion lotion) the one I drive is hopeless unless I manually operate the transmission. A major improvement I might add is the brakes, however I do find the exhaust brake rather feeble.

The new MAN really looks great, I haven’t had the opportunity of driving one yet. :frowning: I like the Actros, a mate of mine hauls timber and sugar cane in South Africa with an interlink combo (B-train) 580 BHP with double diffs. It also sports twin equinox stacks and sounds awesome with a Jake brake. It’s nicknamed Earthquake. :sunglasses:

As you know at the moment I am still on rigids and I currently drive a 53 plate 340 8 legger. I first drove it when it was about six months old and it was nice drive, but 5 years on its a dog.

I spend at least one day a week commuting back and forth to our repair facility. Originally we had 9 of these, although 4 have now gone. The remaining 5 are all in a bad way, they’ve all had turbos, clutch slave cylinders, probs with jammed door handles etc. All have reletively low mileage (less than 300K).

Spent a week in a 08 Daf 360 8 legger the other week and it was far superior - and I never would have thought I would say that!!!

youve had more than 1 turbo  and ooooooooooo fancying a daf eh wait till i tell everyone

P cab says it all really as for the guy waiting for the Renault personally I would have the P cab it might be small and not enough space to swing a cat but it would rattle and squeak a lot less in the first 5 days or more.

I love Volvos and think they are unbeatable but Scanias come a close second.

Renaults lie below the rim of the toilet seat.

Give me a Magnum any day!

But its…French!! :open_mouth:

my point exactly

nowt wrong with magnums that new is the biz .as for scanias the 3 series was superb the 4 series good the r series pants.they look great but its so bland inside the manual gearbox is rubbish and the bottom bunk is horrible the v8 motor is first class scania have got the looks and the engine right they just need a serious rethink on the interior maybe putting the big bunk at the front again would be a good start

Now i am not looking forward to Monday now , my first day in a Frenchy :open_mouth:

the old premium was a DAF LF cab with a bunk. DAF never put that cab on a tractor unit but renault did. the frenchies obviously thought it would be ok for us even though DAF decided it wasnt suitable

going back to scania. Sitting in the TGX right now after driving a 4 series yesterday has highlighted something i like about scanias. The versatility of the steering wheel. Especially the way it can be pushed up over the dashboard out the way. Its a minor thing but it does create a nice big space. I have the seat pushed back and the steering wheel right up just now and there is no gap at all if you look straight down. A nice big door made pointless once you climb in

The 3 series was a very good motor in its day, the 4 series is very poor.

I can’t understand why Scania put the Topline bunk back on the rear of the cab in the R series, perhaps someone from Scania reading this can explain

Also they do need a major makeover on the interior to justify the “premium” pricing they seem to charge, also a better gearbox (manual and auto) should be near the top of their development list as well.
