SCANIA 81

This 81 came to Waugh’s as a long term demo had a semi auto box new out at the time i think  , the one thing
that i remember about it was it had so much more pipework on the thing than the other motors.
I think you could have put any number after the 8 and it would have made no difference to how it went

bowser:
What size engines did they have ?
Reason i ask is im pretty certain the one my stepdad drove pulling ferrymaster trailers was 38T gross … it was the slowest thing ive ever been in but i liked it . I could be wrong but i do remember pulling Tri axles with it .

IIRC “bowser” the 81’s were somewhere about 215 BHP which was an increase from the 190BHP Scania 80’s,when the ‘82 was launched the Intercooled version of the engine got up to 230BHP.As I have stated previously, apart from one rougue secondhand 81’ we ran (which ended up providing many parts for the other 81’s) the 81’s gave us excellent service,we never double shifted them or killed them trying to run them at 38tons.I would say though that they were like driving a car compared to the Atkis and ERF’s from the “stoneage”,sorry to make the admission but it was a sad fact ! Cheers Dennis.

Was going through some photo’s on the old PC and found this one. This was when we were getting lost in Cyprus (2007), on a day out heading for the the Troodos Mountains

I remember that 81 EFD 68T it was one of Peters the last time I saw it it was in farm sale out at Shawbury about 1998/99 it was still in PGB colours with the name buffed out. I did not see it sell. The next time I saw it it was outside a house at Shotthaton near Oswestry afew months later it was all done up in the colours you see now. I did not see it again

The 80/81/82’s were only 8 litre ! hence the lack of go, as rigids they were 100% reliable, as a tractor unit they were fine up to about 28t gross, over this weight the temp gauge fluctuated like crazy which was never a good sign for any engine, this usually lead to head gasket problems and quite often cracked cylinder heads. That poor little motor could never cope with heavy weights and big hills.

The current owner bought it from a farm sale in Shropshire somewhere around that sort of time and it was done up and stored in the farm they owned, in the same sort of area. They ran some trucks from Shropshire and also some from Southampton. The 81 was done up as a show truck and pulled a refurbed single axle ‘hospitality’ trailer for use at shows etc.

The farm in Shrewsbury has since been sold and Dave has bought the unit down here to be done up again at some stage. It was originally in Roadways yard over the road where someone else spotted it and started a thread about it, but they have since moved to a yard in Marchwood and it is currently at Scanias awaiting the work to begin  Waite and Son is still trading and they work in the walking floor game

we owned a nearly new 80 super ,lovely little motor but this did indeed suffer from cracked heads, and would eat propshaft bearings on a regular basis, this was run at 32 tons most of the time.should have bought a 110 !

Chris Webb:
Glass Glover Distribution ran loads of 81s on the Littlewoods contract in the late 70s and early 80s.Harry would have loved it!!

They ran 4-wheelers as drawbar outfits as well, including one with auto box - now they were hard work.

And one finished up as a shunter.

They were disposed of when the 82s came - they weren’t much better either.

did they have a yard in hitchin, herts? i’m sure i used to see them parked up in grove rd…

Yes Andrew, they did have a yard in Hitchin then they moved to North Luton Industrial Estate in the mid 80s.

Any pics of the logo on the door?

This day-cab LB 81 belongs to the Scania dealership in Reims (the famous town of Champagne…), in 2008 it was driven by itself in Germany for a rally .

I’ve spotted these Finnish oldies in 2013. However I series Scania is a very rare sight even in Finland these days.

Not 81, but still a very beatiful lorry:

The now mighty MRCT started of with a couple of them and Albert Moore is about as canny a guv’nor as you could find. They weren’t for the Alps, but they were a fine motor in carefull hands. Jim.
