just wondering if one of you drivers out there could tell me the correct way of using this gearbox, and when you use the splitter, all i drive is a straight 6 speed box
1st/4th is on the bottom left, 2nd/5th is on the top right, and 3rd/6th is on the bottom right. There is not much separation between 1st/4th and 3rd/6th - you don’t have to push the gearstick over very far to get 1st/4th. The far bottom left is crawler, so if you push too far, you will get that. You should feel a stronger spring if you push too far; this separates the “normal” gears from crawler (bottom left) and reverse (top left).
Range change is usually on a silver collar below the gear knob. Push down for low range, pull up for high range. Range change will only take effect with the gearstick in neutral.
Splitter control is usually on a rocker switch on the right-hand side of the gear knob. Push the bottom in for low split, and the top in for high split. When in low split, a yellow light will appear on the dashboard showing a cog with an arrow inside pointing downwards. The splitter will change when either in neutral, or with the clutch depressed.
Both splitter and range change can be pre-selected - e.g. you can change the splitter control without pressing the clutch, and it will make the actual change when you do press the clutch; you can also change the range setting before moving into neutral, and it will make the change as you move the stick.
Give the splitter about half a second to change, and the range change about a second. If you don’t, you risk ending up with no gear, as both the range change and splitter will give you neutral if you try to engage the new gear too quickly.
I usually start in low 2nd when loaded, then low 3rd (simple gearstick change), then low 4th
(raise the range change collar, then change across to the 1st gear position), high 4th (flick the splitter switch and dip the clutch), low 5th (flick the splitter switch and change into the 5th gear position), high 5th, low 6th, high 6th. I quite often miss out high 4th, and occasionally high 5th, depending on the load and conditions.
When unloaded I usually start in low 3rd.
I’ve never used the crawler gear.
When you’re reversing, remember that the range change and splitter still take effect - if you’re in high range, high split reverse, then you’ll be trying to go backwards at about 20 mph. Make sure you remember to go down into low range as a minimum.
As for “when you should use the splitter” - it’s when you want to go to a higher/lower gear, but moving a whole gear is too much. With a light load, you can probably get away with using high split all the time (you wouldn’t want to use low split all the time as you’d get rather poor fuel economy when cruising at 56 mph). I tend not to use the splitter in all but the top couple of gears, but as the load gets heavier, and the hills get steeper, you’ll need to use the splitter further down the gearbox.
HTH…
I was shown on a driving assessment day.
1H, 3L, 4H and then take it from there, and remember to keep it in the Green, this will give you the best economy, don’t worry about using low revs, the Scania engine is designed for it and will pull well for low down the revs.
Pointless giving it loads of revs, you don’t get any extra power out of it, the power band is very flat once in the green.
Thats the right way, just without the 1H bit LOL. You’ll learn.
usually second low then 3rd hi 4th low then4 hi then u can skip you can skip lower down the box but it is weight dependant or it is on my 470
yep,
mostly is a drivermanual in Cab,as direction by Net could result in damage
