Scania 140 / 141

Yes hubreduction, the swedes norwegians and finns used them a lot more than we did.

but all didn,t like them they where not to reliable in beginig      ,used to leak oil,got to warm, they say, self never had any,hej bma

I could never understand the need for hub reduction axles for “on road” operation as you say bma. the axles got hot plus there was more moving parts to wear out and give trouble. The worst hub reduction axle we had experience of was the Seddon Group one when running with the 8LXB Gardners, although I would say we had little or no problems with the Kirkstall D85,Guy and Merc HR axles, but I still didn’t like them and all the Atkis and ERF’s I ordered from new I specc’d the Eaton single reduction and,of course, all the Scanias had the same type of axle c/w the diff lock !! The single reduction axle was ideal for our needs.Cheers Dennis.

they say the stright axle don,t do for heavy work ,but we have operated whit 60 tn whit singledrive axle since 92 and in all condisions of weather and roads, and only two driveaxles have broke, one of them whit a greenhorn trying to start up whit oaverload of gravel (68 ton total ) from uphill, and didn,t be carefull whit clutch
 cheers bma

Your right there bma.I recall only one half shaft breaking on one of our 82’s and it was by a “greenhorn” and it was was on a steep incline !Cheers Dennis.

maybe the myht of bad axel,s and schaft,s are roomers of volvo owner ,as the myht that you do not need oil change in volvo,s couse you do rebilding of engine in the same time           ,our few volvo,s havent been that bad, cheers benkku

Nice one bma.!!! Yea the Scania engines were a lot tougher than the Volvo engines, however,we did have 2X 81’s and 1X 82 with Brazilian built engines and both 81’s were recalled and had their sump oil pick-up checked because they were falling off and a lot of the Brazillian engines failed at the time.I’m not just certain what happened to the 82 but when it was only a month or two old it lost it’s timing and put the valves into the pistons. Cheers Dennis.

have to say lost to v8 engines on one barrel of cheep oil ,only once more on piston changed in al of the v8.but the R420 only 520000km,s no cams to 6,th cylinder so not everyone are perfect :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: ,but you learn to live whit it,but have to say in our work still belive all we buy for drawbar work will bee V8       cheers benkku

I’ve just read the article in this weeks Commercial motor magaine about Astran owner-driver Mark Stewarts story of his custom Scania 141 and wanted to say I wholeheartedly agree with his statements about the 141 being ‘the daddy of the truck world’ and ‘the best truck ever built’

These have long been my sentiments too, as I shared his dream of wanting to own a 141 myself. It took me a bit longer to get mine but I wouldn’t part with it now.
Regards,
Rowland.
