Scania 114C 340 diff lock problem

Hi all,

At a farm today my 8x4 wrecked the rearmost hardy spicer on the driveshaft between the 2 drive axles. It completely disintegrated, leaving the driveshaft hanging. As a get me home fix I got the 13mm socket out and dropped the shaft off the back of the diff, chucked it inside the cab and engaged the diff lock to give me drive (did this once before on my old 93M). Thinking the jobs a good 'un I carried on driving about 15 miles, wasnt going too fast or so I thought, after turning gently into a road end I started changing up thru the gears and suddenly she loses drive again, and starts losing air…and a fair amount of smoke.
The air line which engages the diff lock has melted through because of the heat of the cylinder it connects to, so hot you couldnt touch it, the diff itself feels normal enough temperature but the front part where the main drive shaft enters is boiling hot. The smoke was coming out from where the driveshaft enters. Obviously something in there didnt agree with my limp home method…any suggestions what has caused the heat??
Cant understand what the difference is between the 114C and the old 93M, which drove for a couple of days with no problems on the diff lock before we got her sorted.

the rear prop shaft on a scania 8x4 or 6x4 is at quite an angle and unless they are greased often/ every week they dont last long at all!
the other problem sounds to me like the bearing is starting to fail where the main shaft goes into the 3rd diff, a mate of mine had one fail about 4 weeks ago, the main shaft will snap and the prop falls on the floor if you keep running it!
it’s quite a common problem, i know firm that will do your diff up no problem as scania want aroun 4 k for a re con unit which by the way are rebuilt by the firm i know, for scania to then double the price!!

did you engage diff lock or cross lock?

good point ! cross lock will put hell of a strain on the diff/axle if used for on road driving
