Scania 112

Lawrence Dunbar:
0This old one is still on internal use on a farm, Regards Larry.

Carlisle reg no. Larry so it would have been supplied by Graham Commercials who were/are probably the finest Scania dealer in the UK alongside Keltruck of course ! Cheers Dennis. PS I wonder who the first owner was, colour scheme looks a bit like Wm. Armstrongs of Longtown to me if that is the original paintwork!

Hi Dennis, It belongs to a friend of mine who bought it from The Ford dealer in Carlisle (County Garage IIRC), It was new to Browns of Carlisle.(Thursbey) in the old days, They were taking tyres to Fords at Dagenham & they would only take deliveries on Ford wagons so the story goes, Regards Larry.

Browns were main contractors out of the Pirelli factory at Carlisle Larry and from memory they mainly ran tag axle 112’s so I can’t say I ever saw a four wheeler but obviously they did have an odd one ! I think I saw they ran a Ford Cargo so this is where “Ford” only motors were in use into Dagenham . But Larry we delivered 20ton loads of Pig Iron into the Dagenham foundry from Workington with our Atki Borderers. Cheers Dennis.Check ■■■■■■■ page 184 for some shots of Brown 112’s

Didn’t realise I had so many snaps, one of Cowans taken outside ICI Stowmarket.

Another 4 x 2,I know it is a series 3, but as Dennis said most of Browns Scanny’s 6 x 2 tags,

Hi Mike,
We were called a Ryder “dealer”. We used to rent Ryder trucks and take a commission.
It was a very good fit as we were / are a rental company in our own right but didn’t have our own trucks over 7.5 Tonne GVW.
I’m going back to the late '80’s early '90’s.
We used to pull our fleet from Enfield, sometimes Park Royal or Croydon.
The white Scania was a favorite, and white because I think it came off a contract hire early and was put onto the spot hire fleet.
We don’t run the heavys any more but do ok up to 7.5 tonnes!
Best Regards,
Chris

Mike Ponsonby:
Intresting mace I didn’t know ryders had a depot in Ipswich and white trucks on the ryder fleet were rare in those days
thanks
mike

Mace:
I used to rent this old girl from Ipswich when we had the Ryder Truck Rental franchise.
My main customer’s own trucks were either Fodens of ERF.
You can imagine how the drivers loved this!!
As you can see it had a normal looking tag but I’m sure this was only a single wheel.
No issues with the rear wheels snagging but we did loose a set of rear lamps once when one of the drivers slid the 5th wheel forward to close the gap between the unit and trailer.

Thanks for that! I’ll investigate. Robert

Hello there, first post here and one with which to do some enquiring. I used to travel the length and breadth of the UK with my grandad back in the late 1980s and early 1990s when he drove for Mooney and Morley of Selby (used to be based from their yard at Broxburn before it closed). Initially he drove a Volvo F7 4x2 tractor before progressing onto a P cabbed Scania 112 6x2 unit (I seem to remember a Volvo F10 4x2 at some point too). My question concerns the Scania, specifically the axle config. It was a 6x2 rear lift, with a single tyre set up on the lift axle rather than a double. Not unusual in itself, but the set up was such that it looked as if it had a double tyred tag axle and the outer tyre was removed, leaving only the inner. I’ve only seen this on (a very few) 112’s.Â

Was this config more common than I seem to remember? Why was it done? I’ve not seen anything like this on any other model of Scania or any other marque. Just found some old photos and my puzzlement at this odd looking set up has returned after many years!

ferrymasters used that setup alot and i did look strange.

welcome by the way…

the outer wheel was left off because they used to catch the landing legs when turning with older trailers with shorter necks my grandad worked for mooney & morley for 40 years at selby

Post the photos please :stuck_out_tongue:

hi hydro what was your grandads name

Thanks for the prompt reply, and thanks for the welcome! A long mystery finally solved.

Articmonkey: my Grandad and Uncle both drove for Mooney and Morley for years. Grandads name is Bill Jack and my Uncle is David Patton (now driving for Holmans I believe). I remember my Grandad had the wagon at home near Edinburgh, parked up in the lane behind his house. His work was mainly the chemical runs from Ellis Everard in ■■■■■■■■■■■■ There were exceptions, one multi drop run in an F7 rigid once which took us all round the back streets of Bradford offloading at cash and carrys you’d struggle to back a car into, originally slated for the Scanny and forty foot curtainsider! They had quite a large fleet, varied too. I remember mainly Volvos, F10/12s, F7s and FL10s (dreaded wendyhouses : he got one once and even as a youngster I remember it being rather a cheap looking interior, still I loved it because it had an Eminox upright exhaust!), Scania 2 and 3 series, rigids and artics. Good memories.

i think its because they were not factory fitted me dad had an a reg 142 like it will check me p bucket see if i left it on

small world mate, i have heard your grandads name mentioned and will of seen him many times when he was down this end, i know your uncle aswell, hes been left holmans a while now though and they have finished all together he went to work for chris lodge at norton near doncasterb ut i saw him a few week ago and hes working for a company at old goole called waltons on he tippers. i still see some of the old mooneys drivers now and then but theres not many left now
