Iā€™ve got more pictures somewhere - finding them is a problem!

The two pictures I posted were taken at the end of the East Coast Run in Bridlington last year.

Here is another Iā€™ve found! Taken at the 1999 Cheshire Steam Fair.

Great pics guys.

Bully

This one shows the revision of the Michelotti cab. They are both Handyman tractor units.

And, despite the livery, this one started life with Harperā€™s of Chorley, where a certain bearded jovial engineer served his apprenticeship!

Where have you been hiding?

(that was over-use of the term ā€˜jovialā€™ as wellā€¦)

Southampton, Manchester Containerbase, Rottendamā€¦

(The term ā€œOur Jovial Engineerā€ was coined by Bill Bowker one day many, many years ago - probably in Hollin Bridge Street, even)

I realized after posting that it was a Handyman and not a Trunker! Iā€™m not very good with Scammells!

240,

Just a couple of questions.
Excuse my ignorance but what is the difference between a Trunker and a Handyman? I have driven earlier Scammells, but never these.

Also I was interested by the 2 Dodges in the background, having driven both in my time. The LAD was my first artic and went like the wind. In the days when it was legal, 75 down the fast lane of the M1, but I nearly came to grief at a similar speed down Symonds Yat with a 4-in-line trailer.
The squarish successor next to it I drove with the same firm. It had a very funny gearbox going from 5th low to 6th low, then back to 5th high and finally 6th high. The engine was something else too, a V6 I think which made a hell of a clatter. Any idea what it was?

Salut, David.

The Scammell Trunker was essentially a twin-steer version of the 4x2 Handyman.

The V6 you refer to was a ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  engine, which was later replaced by the ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  VT-504 V8 - a direct competitor to the Perkins V8 that was fitted in the K-series Dodge and itā€™s successor the Commando.

Only by 23 minutes though!

Thanks all, especially for the ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  info. I remember it being said at the time that it was an American engine and everyone was terribly impressed, not having heard of such things before in England.

Salut, David.

great pics i would love to have a drive of oneā€¦ not sure i could though.
