Nice line up ainacs, Sykes Group had a yard full of Crusaders like these but unfortunately no photos.

Hi Steve

If you look closely the far left Crusader has a slightly different grill than the rest with two extra bars across was this a special prototype or what?

The headlights were round too,not square as standard!

Don’t know anything about the Rye Whiskey Road Band, but I like the backdrop.

Hi ainacs, this shows the same Crusader with the different front panel and headlights, maybe Chris Hill can help to explain the difference?
I do believe some later models were badged as Leyland, maybe one of those?

Sorry Steve, the one you refer to is behind the front one,you can just see the central bar going across the radiator, the front one in your picture,is the second from the left on the original picture line up,I think you will find.

Rgds,

David

Hi Steve different headlamps too!

[/quote]
But Samson had the same grill and headlamps!

This is what Tribsa put on the Southampton thread!

tribsa:
Hi All
The Scammell with the different grill had a Detroit in but so did others with Detroits so iam not sure why but the 8x4 Sampson had that grill as well also the Scammell badge is at the bottom and it has 4 headlamps instead of two square ones.
The reg of this one is SNB 431 J.It was new to Avis Truck Hire in 1971 and brought by Hills in 1972 from Brinksway Motors in Stockport.
Cheers Rich

JUST TRAWLED THE PAGES AND NOTICED THAT A LOT OF SPECIALS IE RECOVERY AND HEAVY HAULAGE MOTORS HAD TWIN HEAD LAMPS, BUT I RECKON THOSE GRILLS ON THE J REG,S WERE LIKE LAND ROVER IN THOSE DAYS THATS WHAT WE GOT SO STICK EM ON .
PROBABLY WERE THE ORIGINAL PROTO TYPE GRILL . COME ON SOME ONE PUT US WRITE

swayze 1 I am sure you are correct and I think it was a early demonstrator which I seem to recall in Bass Charringtons livery and as far as the headlights are concerned it looks as if the quality control were recruited from land rover as some 6x4 units D/D s had square head lights and the armys rolls engined ones had round twins. I can recall seeing it maybe on bubbs thread or in a book so I am starting in the books it should be quicker :exclamation:

the folling text is copied from the book " The prototype 6x4 Crusader as prepared for the 1968 Commercial Motor Show. It was powered by a Detroit Diesel 8V-71 two stroke engine giving 290 bhp from 9.3 litres. Production models had a different grill and lettering, most export and military crusaders were badged as Leylands." so you were definitely correct

cheers Johnnie
P S I will still search for it when it was in Bass livery as it could have a reg. no. on

Look what’s turned up again:

Hi Steve no the picture you have as the kyeser radiator shutter the one I am thinking of as the exact same front grill with the bar across and i think it was facing the opposite way but it will turn up.

cheers mate Johnnie

Another Internet find:

An Irish Crusader:

Don’t know where this one comes from:

Don’t know where this one comes from:

Hi Steve; I posted this photo on another thread ages ago. It was owned/driven by Richard Garn from the North East.
It was an ex Heanor Haulage motor which they ran in Saudi for a while. Richard ran this, plus a Scania 140 and a Volvo F88. All 3 were running across the desert as roadtrains. The Crusader had a Detriot in it and pulled like a train. The photo shows it grossing about 100 tons! If you look closely, you can see that Richard removed a couple of letters from Scammell, hence it was affectionately known as the “Camel”.

Hi Truckerash
It’s a fine looking beast, I found it on Facebook (Scammell Crusader Appreciation Society: facebook.com/home.php?sk=lf# … 0386878856 ) - do you have a better picture?
I wonder what the Saudis thought about the name Crusader?

stevecook:
Hi Truckerash

This is clearer; Check out the badges “pinched” from a Scania! “Super” & “V8”
