I still cross borders at Ventimiglia on occasion, it’s a nice drive, but only handy if you have to be in that part of the country I reckon.
Was week ended at the old customs premises there couple of years ago, and much to my surprise, I got a knock on the door of a woman of ill repute, she was offering her services which I friendly declined. The restaurant was great though, not sure if that’s still going?
Never went to Ravenna docks but did go to EniChem with synthetic rubber several times. If I remember there was a large dusty truck area by the gate with a decent restaurant there.
Get cleared wherever, and then roll up there to park and eat. Coffee and tip in the morning. Worked well.
If it is still there, there is a good little restaurant by Cannes Airport. Gotta be early to park though on the street.
And the Elefant Bleu at Le Muy was a good un too.
This picture does not look like Mt Cenis to me, went over many times both ways in the Summer months and IIRC most of the edges if not all were protected with giant boulders but not railings. When loaded in Prato which we did on a regular basis from Albini & Pitigilani we would head for the top of Cenis as it was cool up there and no mozzies, diesel leaking from the top tank as we filled in Italy as it was dirt cheap, just made the finger gesture on the border T 2 and 20 fags out the window and did not stop just went through slow, good memories long gone now, Buzzer
Gosh ! Just been on Google maps. The resto in Cannes now looks like a private house.
The resto in Le Muy had a customer review in 2023, but now is on street view as a Burger King. Think I’ll take a pass on that.
I noticed the “Sapeurs” on the door, but see no “Pompiers”? I see a hose on the back, but no water reservoir?
Can I guess that vehicle would be used to pump water from a lake? Or a fixed reservoir in the forests?
Maybe it would also carry equipment to cut fire breaks in the forest? Guesses of course.
Ed. As an aside I did a bit of work around Lambesc on and off. The weight limit on Cannet was pain though. Occasionally saw the Patrouille De France practising when down that way.
As an aside, (again) but about forest fires, a few years ago I saw some French water bombers at work. They were swooping over the A7 and scooping water from the bay north of Marignane airport.
Incredibly skillful flying: Flying a few feet off the water, and dropping the scoop into the water increases the moment on the underside of the aircraft, and the weight goes up rapidly as the plane fills it’s tanks. Seeing it on film is impressive, but seeing it in real life is better.
I agree, I always get the feeling that any moment they will be dragged down into the water, but it is well established custom and practice all over the world, so must be right.
