Is this a Bernard with a Somua cab fitted?

Froggy55:
1Another quizz for which I have no answer. Here’s a Spanish advertisement for Fruehauf semi-trailers including Pegaso, Alfa-Romeo, Barreiros and at least one Leyland (bottom right) tractors.

0But what on Earth can be this one, in the middle of the page? The grille definitely looks Italian (Fiat or Lancia), but the Italian never produced six-wheeled bonneted tractors. My only suggestion would be and ex-US Army tractor or wrecker fitted with an Italian cab, but to my knowledge, the Allies never entered Spain during WW II…

Going by the looks, I would say Lancia, other than that, haven’t got a clue Paul…

Saw this UNIC advertised in Goole UK for £1200 looks a fair thing to restore, Buzzer

Unic P8 with the latest grille (c. 1974). I used to drive a similar one, fitted with a sleeper cab, on long distances in 1980. My recollection is one of a rather pleasant truck to drive. Powered either by a 135 bhp Unic engine and 2 x 4 speed gearbox, or 160 bhp OM CP3 engine witha 5-speed box with an unusual pattern. If the engine is OK and the bodywork sound, it’s a good deal.

Doesn’t look to be beyond saving, does it? Hurry up Senior, this one has got your name written on it! See you at Locomotion next year

As soon as I saw it I thought, that’d be nice…however,

  1. not sure on the French licencing system as to whether I could drive it,

  2. no where to keep and work on it now…

  3. Too old to be scrabbling under and over old wagons…

  4. Still looking to buy a Solex, that’s about it these days… :unamused:

Just “clock” the “slick” on the n/s front wheel of that Bernard ! Cheers Dennis.

Fruehauf was international- nowt to stop it putting pictures of its Italian trailers in its Spanish adverts. I’ve had a look at lots of Fiats and Lancias, but none of them has the dip in the front bumper. I think I’ve seen it before, though. Alfa Romeo and OM searches drew a similar blank. The closest I could get was Isotta Fraschini:

There are a few vehicles in here, not necessarily Isottas, which have some of the features:

Some of those cars are stunning. I could spend all day reading Myn Transport Blog.

If we could see a vehicle with that swept-down bumper, we might be a bit closer to the answer. I still agree with your guess that it might be a wartime tractor, with a bonnet grafted on.

Edit- Berna had the swept-down bumper:

I still don’t trust it. I’ll go for an Isotta Franschini nose grafted onto an ex-war tractor- for now!

Edit nr.2- some Lancias with split bumpers here:

I don’t know what I’d do “H” without you to keep me reet on the finer points ! The Frogs can’t help it if they drive on the wrong side of the road ! Cheers Dennis.

Possibly a Cottard cab, which was also available on Somua or Willème chassis.

Thanks for the links. Lovely mighty and handsome Italian trucks as I love them! It look that, apart from motorcycles, Isotta-Fraschini did build anything that goes on roads! Theit 1930s cars certainly matched Rolls-Royces or Bugattis!

droopy bumper…on an OM

Good find but, like the ones I found, I don’t think it gets us closer to the answer. The mystery vehicle had a long front overhang, and a sloping bonnet. Neither the OM or the IF vehicles had that. I’m tending towards the idea that it’s an OM or IF cab on top of an ex-WW2 tractor- the same tractors used by Loheac and others. MoL, Ginaf, maybe.

We’ll get there in the end- the journey is as pleasurable as the destination!

The first OM trucks were Saurers made under licence, like this one, which has strange lights focusing on the ground just in front of its bumpers.

Could they be horns, not lights? If so a silly place to fit them.
When I bought my Land Rover Defender (way back in 1998-still my daily driver) the factory fitted lovely, mellow sounding, horns. The first time it saw a couple of feet of slurry-like mud they packed up! LR had fitted them low down just behind the grille. They were packed full of the stuff and could not be resurrected. They had to be replaced but this time fitted high up under the bonnet…

Most important question though… was it powered by a TL12?

There were a lot of little firms and blacksmiths, most of them long gone now, that did conversions to ex-WW2 material, could be a needle in a haystack?!

I think I’ve seen that high, tapered bonnet before. Even if the lorry is a one-off, I bet we could find out where the cab and bonnet came from.

I’d say an M 426, like those used until the 2000s by Loheac.
