Italian…

There was an interesting article in the latest edition of Heritage Commercials about the Fiat 300PT that was used in the Econofreight fleet, seemed to be a tough little workhorse…

Speaking of Italian, that got me thinking about Cometto…now apperently they are the world leader in supplying all sorts of trailers for the heavy haulage industry, and world leader means really that word in this case, their equipment is being used in Europe, North and South America, Asia and Zealandia…did some “research” and stumbled upon a vast amount of pic’s…

Due to a take over some Cometto modular trailers ended up at v.d. Vlist as well, I remember being it quite solid and strongly build, it was sold in the end though, because the majority of the modular stuff is all Scheurle and you can’t connect the two of them together…
I won’t bore you with details and such, but I find heavy haulage trailers so much more interesting then the actual tractor units, simply because of the fact that I’ve got to work with such trailers.
Hopefully it is of interest to Danne and the other regulars…

That stirs the memory fergie , in the early 50s my dad worked for a firm that refurbed the half tracks , stripped the bodies off and put on a hopper body for lime spreading . There were dozens of them in a field near us . A lot of them still had the aa guns mounted minus breech blocks and it was quite common to find loose ammunition in the lockers . Ye gods if they found one shell now there would be a 2mile exclusion zone , then they just stacked them aside until there were enough for the army to collect . More ramblings of an ageing mind for you , Dave

Hi Rigsby. Coincidence your Dad working on them, tough old beasts they were…we had a farmer in my village in Hampshire with the old GMC 6X6 converted to a lime spreader, Perkins P6 conversion, but everything else original including the wooden steering wheel…then when he retired he parked it up, but wouldn’t sell it for years, it deteriorated so much that it was worthless when he eventually did sell.

Ammo and shells…Friend in Normandy bought a farmhouse near Villiers Bocage, he had 20 odd acres which he didn’t use so rented to a local farmer. As it hadn’t been ploughed for years he was ploughing up shells by the dozen, stacking them in a big heap at the side of the field until the army ( after about 2 years) came and blew them up…He also found in the attic five boxes of ammo for the German 42 machine gun, he reported first to the cops who said they’d come to take it away, that was 14 years ago and it’s still stacked in one of his barns…it’s so common up in that area, no one really bothers with it…image finding that lot in a barn in the UK, and keeping it …

Hello again Gentlemen
Dave/Fergie intends to join us as a visitor, and I helped him locate a nearby hotel, which still has some rooms available.
Best regards

Definitely be there, saving my centimes as I type :unamused: Mrs Fergie is also coming along, if she gets bored with lorries and lorry chat, there’s a chateau nearby so she’ll go have a butchers at that. Thanks to Dave Junior Davidoff for sorting out the hotel at Melun…

Be nice to meet up Froggy, sure we’ll find a RDV point, …the vin tent perhaps, it seems a long way off, but time flies…

Dave and Davidoff,

Could you pm me the Hotel as Angie and I would like to attend, do you think I am too late to get an entry for my little Renault Galion ? I will have it ready by then.

Regards
Richard

Nice one Richard! Is that Peugeot yours as well?

Couple more from the Cometto files…

Hello again Gentlemen

I have some good news : For the first time since 2014, this year we will again have an edition of LA LOCOMOTION EN FÊTE.

Dave/Fergie intends to join us as a visitor, and I helped him locate a nearby hotel, which still has some rooms available.
Froggy 55, if 55 stands for the Meuse Département then it should be less than a 3-hr drive for you!

In case any of you would like to attend and you need some information on practical arrangements or translation to French, I am happy to help.

Maybe see you in Melun on Jun 9th. It certainly will be a fun time.

Best regards

Hi Mates,

“55” refers to my year of birth, not my “département” which is 18!

I intend to go to Melun (180 kms North from my home) in June, and would be delighted to meet some of you. I guess you’ll gather around the few British trucks on show, but we still have 3 months to agree on meeting details.

Just hope the weather will be better than what it’s like these days!

Bonjour Froggy 55

I see. So if you are based some 180 Kms from Melun and in the Département du Cher (18), then possibly you live quite close to Sancerre or Pouilly-sur-Loire, both villages being well-known for their superb white wines, especially the AOC pouilly-sur-Loire and AOC pouilly-Fumé. I could think of worse places to settle  .

Honestly, Locomotion having been extinct for 2 years, I have no idea how many lorries there will be so could be just a handful, or a huge turn-up, so not sure how large a crowd you will need to wade through to find us.
We will be standing on the “plateau camions” and yes the Brits should stand out and make for easy geolocation. Here are a few of the motors that should be present and facilitate your navigation.

Terry’s Crusader.
You will also instantly recognise Terry through his distinctive East-London accent but that’ll be for you to discover.

Glenn’s F12.
Glenn is from ■■■■■■■ and here again you should be able to tell who’s who just by listening.
Rest assured, Glenn doesn’t normally park his vehicles upside down. He had enjoyed some red nectar that day.

Glenn might bring along his lovely Leyland Super Comet:

Our Neil usually takes his Scanny 92 although I hear he is working on another vehicle form the same marque but with a much larger engine so we shall see what he turns up with. I am parked up next to Neil and I will be coming with the same motor again this year.

If you come towards us anywhere between 10:30am and 4pm, then again between 5pm and 10pm, you are likely to see us in some configuration similar to this one.

I understand some participants intend to equip themselves with more sophisticated barbecueing implements, enough to make an Aussie blush. Nous ne mourrons pas de faim!.

We look forward to seeing you at Locomotion.

Regards
David

Hi R & A…Wow, that would be good, the hotel is the IBIS at Melun. Dave junior will fix you up with the details for showing your camionette, I know he’s busy, so might be prudent to PM or mail him.

We’ll talk soon ?

Dave

Hello Dave Senior and Maggie D

No worries Maggie D, there should still be a way to get you in with your superb little Renault Galion. In Fact, your lovely-looking 203 would be just as eligible!

Accommodation is also feasible, I still have two or three rooms available in my quota available so you can have one.
I will PM you to help you sort out the details.

Cheers
David

Hi David,

You got it right! I live 12 kms SW from Sancerre and 15 kmw West from Pouilly; on the other side is the Menetou-Salon vineyard. So I"m surrounded by “vignerons”, and will certainly bring a bottle or two to Melun next June!

There are now a few vintage trucks event in France, but scattered in places at the edges of the country. Melun is close to Paris, no too far from GB, Germany and Belgium; let’s hope it’ll be a success, and cross fingers. And light a candle so that the weather should be similar to what it is today and should be tomorrow: pouring rain!

I took this picture at la Locomotion in La Ferté-Alais in 2010. Maybe this Leyland Comet was brought by one of you? Any idea if any pre-1960 British trucks or buses/coaches will be there this year? I’d love to see a Mammoth Major 8 Mk II or III, and sit at the wheel!

Cheers

Paul
