Bonnets…must have been something to have driven one of these old girls with a huge bonnet out in front…

The photos of the two TLRs look recent. Are those vehicles in preservation? I hope so- that yellow one looks beautiful.

Yes Anorak, they’re both on the preservation scene, as are these beautiful beasts…

I must visit some French (and German, and Swedish, and Swiss etc. etc. etc.) old vehicle shows. Those TLM15s, to me, are as elegant as anything that came out of Crewe at the time.

I found this here- fondationberliet.org/wp-cont … uefort.jpg

The cab looks like a chopped-off bus- not as well-proportioned as the “factory” option. Were the coachbuilt cab versions 15R’s and the in-house ones 15M’s, or is that an over-simplification?

Hiya,
Way back I spotted a Scammell Crusader badged Leyland. Why ■■
thanks harry, long retired.

Export markets liked Leyland. They did not trust stuff made in London, so Leyland Group products made in the Southern subregions were badged Leyland.

Hiya,
Thanks for that “anorak” quickly cleared up and understandable.

Bit odd isn’t it? I always reckoned the Scammell’s had a much better reputation than Leyland’s…?

It looks like a Pelpel cab, quite similar to the ones fitted standard on Bernard trucks. Much more spacious and comfortable compared to the standard “M” cab.

I said it with tongue in cheek, being a Lancashire lad. The more truthful answer is that Leyland wanted to present a single corporate identity (to make them look bigger and better than Mercedes Benz, maybe?), and they were in charge. Some markets loved Leyland- Spain and India spring to mind.

Thanks for inquiring about what remains a mysterious truck! Here’s a picture of a Berliet GDM 10, fitted with the same cab, bonnet and grille than the TDM. The angle of this picture is similar to the one of the mysterious Belgian truck and, if the two cabs are very close in matter of style, many differences show that they’re not similar. Even the radiator grille is not the same; just a matter of small details like the crank hole.

I’d really want to find the truth…

Not from the same side nor angle but herewith a side-picture of a Denonville Diesel.

Well, it appears the mystery truck is neither a Denonville, neither a Berliet. I’ll put my best detectives on that clue…

To my opinion and judgement the base-chassis is American as the steering-wheel is in between the chassis-beam, that together with the fact that Camerman had quite a reputation on rebuilding all kinds of chassis, I expect this one is from the army-surplus, just after WW2, 1946.

I confess I hadn’t considered that eventuality, but why not? Apart from the wreckers and many off-road trucks (GMC, Dodge, Diamond, White, etc…), my knowledge about American productions is limited…

We can’t know everything but all together here we come close! As said, it’s probably a mix
of several demolished and re-assembled stuff left behind so early after the war. Bonne journée!

Late 1980s Paris.

Found some more interesting (well, for me anyway  ) pic’s from the other side of the world…from our point of view that is…

Don’t reckon the following was on the Sandbach specification list…? Hopefully the ERF “crew” knows more about it…?

.

Love those tight hairpins…

Pete and Fergie on their first day out… :unamused:

That export ERF with the 3MW cab looks pretty impressive. NZ isn’t it? Probably had the NTC 335 lump in it. Robert

My thoughts exactly Robert! About looking impressive that is…can’t spot the difference between a 3MW or a 5 MW cab I’m afraid…
I believe they hail from Christchurch NZ, don’t know if they’re still out and about though…

Mostly invisible improvements like better sealing. The bigger headlights is the best giveaway. Robert

Concerning long bonnets, I was regularly asked to drive this Berliet GBH 260 some 20 years ago, fitted with a ghastly cable-operated roll-on/roll-off skip. Shortly afterwards, it was shipped to Nigeria.
I also drove a Renault CLM 340 similar to this one for 10 days. A most uncomfortable truck, very shaky, and I guess it also was shipped to Africa for a second life…

I’m envious Froggy…a French bonneted wagon…bliss…I did take a couple of bonneted Maggie wagons, destined for the UN during the Bosnia crisis, but only to Southampton docks, about a 6 mile drive from the garage… :frowning: :unamused:

A mixed bunch of old B&W pics.
