Froggy55:
Thanks guys! Was this model (the initial 6x4 one) ever commercialised in UK?
Yes. Around 1982, that cab appeared on the Leyland Landtrain and Scammell S24. The differences between the two types are mentioned here: hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.ph … -Landtrain
The S24 was the heavier vehicle, although it seems that some hybrids were built, so identifying them was not 100% straitforward, even before the Maltese got to work on them.

Never saw a S24 as a tipper before…so that’s already quite something, but to make it even more “special” that 2nd steering axle seems to be a DAF product, it’s got a DAF wheelhub…if its not, it’s time to go to spec savers yet again…
None the less, quite clever piece of construction and “see what parts we’ve got in the shed” of those Maltese lads eh
Another example Patrick of Maltese ingenuity , AEC Marshall with Dodge cab.
Oily

There ingenuity seems endless Oily
That 8 wheeled S24 that was once in the Curtis fleet…what a cracking wagon that was, did forgot about that one for a bit…Cheers for posting mate! Me old Scammell heart is beating rapidly once again…well it already did yesterday when Robert’s LHD crusader thread came up
Where did it end up though? Did it became part of the ALE fleet?

Back to Berliet now; I thought I already had posted pictures of this unfortunately defunct truck on this thread, but can’t find them. A GBO converted into a 8x4 by a Corsican shovelling contracter. Probably due to the cost of its transfer onto the Continent from Corsica, its owner coulnd’t find a buyer and it was recently screpped.
Blimey Froggy!
What a unit, fair amount of weight at the back there… was it equipped with power steering…?
Fortunately yes! All the big GBO/TBOs had it as a standard equipment. Nevertheless, its Corsican owner had to fit an extra hydraulic pump to operate the steering of the 2nd axle.

Concerning power steering, Renault already offered it (air-operated) on some pre-WW II trucks such as this 1936/38 6-wheeler…

And even on this 1933 dragger. Just try and estimate its load!
Seems the Corsican mechanic’s were up to the task as well
Air-operated power steering? Do you’ve got some technical “pic’s” of such a system? I’m quite curious of how that worked…
As for the load on the last pic, they weren’t afraid to put things to the max…and then add some more…

Despatched will no doubt verify, but the big old Scammells, like the Constructor, had air assisted power steering back in the late 50’s…
Hi Dave your spot on I dont know how you would have kept them old 6x6s on the road without thier air assisted steering,I remember what ETN was like when a compressor belt went.
Back in 1982, I drove for a few months a Chausson coach fitted with air-operated power steering. Not much difference compared to a classical hydraulic one; whenever you turned the wheel, you heared a “pssscht”.
Well, I did learned something new about air operated power steering then…
Shows my age I reckon…still wet behind the ears and all…as the great poet Fergie once said “I’ll get me coat”…
Right, some other exotic stuff then, from the time there was an “iron curtain”…
Tatra, named after the Tatra mountains, a piece of the Carpathian mountains, most probably the most ingenious marque of them all, not only known for their lorrie making but they had a suburb car divsion as well with the Tatra T87 as the most stunning model of them all, with Hans Ledwinka and Paul Jaray being the driving forces…
