I put in an occasional shift in my local music shop if the owner needs Saturday cover. It is paid, but to be honest it’s no hardship to me to spend a day in a big room full of guitars.
Anyway, the relevance to this forum is that I work nights in my proper job. Usually if I’m in the music shop, I finish driving on Saturday morning around 4 or 5. Then I come home, maybe ■■■■■■ an hour or so asleep, get a shower and go off to open up the shop at 9.
I finish in the music shop at 5.30 Saturday afternoon, and I don’t drive a lorry again until 7pm on Monday, so I get plenty of time for my weekly rest even with a Saturday shift. I’m not on a tacho in the music shop (obviously) and I don’t clock in or anything, and it doesn’t in any way affect my fitness to drive come Monday night. But I’m curious … is this strictly legal? or would it, as I suspect, count as Other Work. All advice appreciated, although I’ll still be disappearing off in about an hour to open up the shop.

Legally it is other work for the EU regs so therefore an infringement for insufficient daily rest
Realistically, I do not see how you would get caught out doing this - perhaps somebody else can?
Not unless we knew who his employer was, or what the shop was called, then we could always inform VOSA Rog…NOT.
Of course he merely ‘helps’ out in the geetar shop, and doesn’t get paid, doesn’t he? Yes, that is the correct answer.
Ken.
The only safety concern I would have is if you drive back from the record shop because you are likely to be very tired at that point

Nope … it’s a pleasant five minute walk from my front door. In fact, if I factor in what I have to spend on diesel to get to my actual job, the music shop pays slightly more than my driving job. Which is crazy, given that any half intelligent sixteen year old could do it.
Of course a video clip of you playing would be nice.
Bit of Back in Black by AC/DC or something similar…
Ken.

I grew up playing along to my AC/DC records. I can still remember most of the riffs!

Then crack on man.

People really should think about what they post on these forums, you’ve posted where you work and now you’re telling the world that on every Friday/Saturday shift you knowingly have insufficient daily rest.
Given that you do the shop work at the end of the week and have the required weekly rest it’s to be hoped that no-one would bother about it, but nevertheless it may be worth thinking of any possible ramifications before advertising your wrongdoings on the Internet.

Then, realistically, there are no safety or other concerns except you are probably a bit tired and then you have a long weekly rest to recouperate before driving again = no worries in my book
Why are you even posting this nonsense, once the digi-card is out you are free to spend your time as you wish, contrary to what some people think VOSA are not some omnipotent big brother,I don’t really think they’ll give a toss cos you do a few hours in a music shop unless you go running to them demanding to be done!!,jeeez Cue all the barrack room lawyers on here now lining up with EU directive this or hours law that, its not complicated, card out-your time

Why is he talking crap? I think you’ll find he’s talking about the real world, you know, the one some of us live in.
Is your obvious objection to the op working Saturdays in a music shop because you feel this will result in him suddenly becoming a danger to others? Or do you object on the grounds that someone in a suit has decreed that this is the law, and as such you’ll toe every line they lay down? Or is it maybe because you aren’t a music fan?

Why exactly am I talking crap, has nobody any commonsense any more,do you need a rule book to tell you everything nowadays, there’s even a post on here about a guy wondering if he should make a record of having a day off .I’m beginning to think we really need a pass/fail DCPC, it would root out some of the clowns in this job

I am with maoster on this one because the law is there to prevent driving tired but in this case I cannot see any such issue - ok, its technically illegal and if it had been the other way around - record shop then driving I would be saying differently
Just my personal realistic non legal view

yeah that would be me GOG47 the guy who asked a question about having the day off.simple enough question mate which i wasnt sure about, isnt it better to ask,but maybe you know everything eh■■?
Was a similar thread running a while ago. but in that case it was the employer who was on here, he was fretting and worrying about the implications of one of his drivers being a bouncer on a weekend. Didn’t see the problem myself as long as he was getting enough rest nor do i see an issue here

Your right the DCPC should be a pass or fail. The OP is asking what he already knows
The coment I made as in ■■■■ is a flipent remark to card out the time is yours yes I agree time is yours and regs are there for a reason. … yes l live in the real world … maybe Rog you need to start re writing all your posts spouting the regs off …
Just to throw this old cherry in …
What do you think about the Taxi driver doing a shift on agency on sat night then catching a 15hr shift sunday then having 3hrs kip before popping out on the school run picking up 3 kids to take them to school or taking your dear old mum to the Renal clinic … would you be happy … but his card is out so his time is his ■■?
Just saying at what point do you draw the line…
Where do regs stop and start.
nick2008:
Rog you need to start re writing all your posts spouting the regs off …
My view is to inform what the law is and then let the driver make up their own mind
Sometimes the law is an ■■■ which is why I will then put in a personal logical realistic viewpoint
Cant be fairer than that
