Sat navs

Do u like em or loathe them ? Which is the best one to buy ? I like mine it’s a navman with truck mode added

Sorry to be critical but i dont agree with sat navs in a truck, they seem to be modern culture but will ■■■■ you up at some point, what happened to old school, a to z, my truck is full of them ranging from glasgow to milan, much more trust worthy than a prat nav, too many people rely on a computer these days

I’m also old school , I see sat nav as a assist not a guarantee , still better than a to z and improving all the time if u don’t like them don’t use them

I have a laptop based satnav with a small dash mounted monitor, this has Autoroute, Google maps and a couple basic navigation apps. I do check bridge height atlas if going somewhere unfamiliar though.
I don’t understand the anti satnav brigade, after all it’s just another useful tool to which you should add common sense and observation.
I have no desire to go back to a box or two full of coffee stained paper maps that can be out of date the moment they leave the printing press, oh and a pocket full of change for the phone box. Progress Please.

Mine used to be, and still I doubt I had more than 0.01% of European roads covered. I would hazard a guess that a German Falk plan city street map is at least £10 nowadays, and I had dozens that I only ever used once or twice.

Now I have 100% of roads covered in a device which is little bigger than a cigarette packet, and it never costs me a penny to find my way round a place that I’ve never been to before…

I like sat-navs but you do have to be careful not to get too reliant on them, truck sat-navs are now at the stage where they are really useful and pretty reliable.

A truck sat-nav and a decent road atlas is much better than having to rummage through loads of paper street maps or having to ask people for directions.

I combine a cheap basic Sat Nav, a Trucker’s Atlas for checking for low bridges, and (most importantly) my brain, and between the three I rarely have a problem finding places.

I got away with a car Tom Tom and common sense for aged plus the odd google maps on I phone no problems. Snooper truck nav meant to be good but 400 quid also if you have I pad or tablet the Renault trucks sat nav ap is meant to be good at about 100 quid

Snooper S700,very good tv,multi channels, they are knocking £40 off the MRP at some MSAs,it can do up to 16 multi drops, but will sometimes send you down a bridle path in the back of beyond, and sometimes too slow to respond once you leave a premises. Comes up with RTC s,floods, fires, road closures, you press a button to avoid delays.

I have both of these and it’s a great combo, a decent truck nav isn’t cheap, I have the snooper s7000 definitely not cheap, but it’s clear and reliable, I bought a decent truck atlas as well and haven’t gone wrong yet.

Ive got navman tourer cost £90 and then got truck mode upgrade £70 , got 7inch screen . Never took me any were nr a low bridge (16ft trailers on multidrop nwest) it’s not 100% with weight limits and can take u down some narrow lanes , apart from that I think it’s fantastic and great value . It even gives traffic updates and takes you around them . Great for night trunking as every road seems to close at night lol

I do agree with you, but a map can also get you into problems aswell.

Please tell me you’re avin a laugh, drivers have been managing to get around since wagons were invented, I’ve been utilising the work of cartographers since 1977 and have managed OK in about 16 or 17 countries.

Ross.

A satnav is a tool in exactly the same way as a map is.

Used sensibly it is great aid to finding your way around.

Follow it blindly and well, we’ve all seen the YouTube footage.

Map, satnav, directions from a mate. They all are valuable but need combining with a healthy dose of common sense to get you safely where your going.

As for what’s good I still use a 7 year old tomtom go710. It’s not perfect and isn’t set up for truck dimensions but if combined with the other tools available it does help me find my way around.

I’ve also a mate who tramps Europe who swears by the snooper. Reckons that once the vehicle data is correct he just punches in the address and it takes him straight there.

Cheers
