I’m thinking of buying a IPAQ and Tom Tom 3 system, but I’m after a little advice please.
The firm I work for often change us from one truck to another, therefore I would need to transfer the system when I change vehicles. Does the reciever unit need to go on the roof of the cab or is it ok to have it mounted on the dash ?. Obviously it would be more involved moving it if it has to be mounted on the roof.
I’ve used Tom Tom 2 for 12 months now in a car and can only say its superb. Its not perfect ie some new addresses are missing and you do get the occasional quirk but overall its very good.
Mounting the sat nav receiver on the dash is ok provided the truck has not got a fancy screen that blocks radio waves( can’t remember the name) if it has then the receiver will have to be outside. As far as i am aware the electronics are 12v so a dropper will probably be required in a truck cab.
All the info you require can be found at www.pocketgps.co.uk
Forgot to add that by using a PDA with readily available FREE software, the PocketGPS speed camera database can be used which is also free and warns the driver when approaching a known camera position.
I use a Dell axim with no probs, I’ve got the CF (Compact Flash Card) which makes it simple to move from Vehicle to Vehicle, only problem I’ve encountered to date has been on A5 from Bangor to Shrewsbury where it lost the signal a couple of times, for maybe 30 seconds or so, whilst driving through tree covered areas, apart from that I’ve never had a bit of bother with it just been stuck on the windscreen fixing bracket, although the CF does come with an external antenna as well but I’ve never found the need to use it yet.
ginger you read my mind i use the same system on a 2210 with a tomtom blue tooth receivfer this would probbably be the best option for you as its more versitile than the cfn or wired systems
Just got a great eal on the auction site beginning with “E”: GPS receiver (USB fitting for my laptop) plus Infomap navigation software covering the whole of Europe for £68 plus postage. I was quoted £70 for a receiver alone in my local computer shop. Can’t wait for it to arrive.
As a whole PDAs arebetter for in the wagon cos hey are less ■■■■■■■■■■■ but I’ll stick to my laptop cos I can play mp3s through my cassette adaptor for the stereo. Plus I can watch DVDs in the evening when the telly is crap - again with the sound going through the stereo in the cab.
Today I recieved my brand new ipaq and tomtom 3, it took a while to get it set up, then I went for a drive in my Car! . I had great fun trying to get lost but although I haven’t done a real test it allways found the correct way!!
Its is really clever that a small box knows exactly where you are and all the UK roads!!
I carn’t wait to go to work on Monday now
it takes only seconds to move from car to car, cab to cab!!
