I had lettuce, chips and mayo butty for dinner. Loverly.
emmerson2:
When we were newly wed, and Herself was trying hard to please, she used to make up my snap tin, but she only ever put one filling in the butties. So I’d have six cheese one day, then six tomato the next, and so on.
So, one day, I asked if I could have a variation in my butties.
Next day, I had two cheese on top.
Then two tomato.
Then the next two were cheese and tomato!
But bless her, she did get the idea after a while, and I’ve still got her 48 years later, so she must have got it right!
But, fave buttie? Homemade bread, Welsh salt butter, and good old-fashioned roast beef!
I forgot the best one; soft white roll with tartare ( raw minced steak) with raw onions a sprinkle of peper and salt and of course the roll covered in proper butter.
( in Holland and Belgium they call it Broodje Tartaar)
Don’t knock it till you tried it.
Where does the expression “barm” come from? Is it a Northern thing? We use “cob” in the Midlands which I suppose is different too.
Steak and onions with ketchup is high on my list. In my first job after leaving school I was sat in the canteen with a ham and crisp sandwich and I remember this girl saying “Where does he think he is, at primary school!”
Still, even now you can’t beat walkers cheese and onion on white with ham.
I do a mean egg banjo with bacon, cut so the yolk breaks and runs down the cut edges, with crisps as a side obviously lol.
Mucky fat with a sprinkling of coarse salt.
Condensed milk, or, for people old enough to remember it, Virol, which alas isn’t available any more.
