Samsung S4 users beware

woke up in the middle of the night to a burning smell and the charger being fused to the phone! After reading reports this is a fairly common issue and if left the phone can burst into flames! taken it to Vodafone and they think it should come under warranty. I wish i’d never left apple, this is just one of many issues with my phone and its not even 12 months old.

I’ve got one as well and have noticed they do get very hot while on charge, I used to charge it overnight but stopped due to the heat issue and now just charge it when I’m at work.

I also wish I’d stayed with an iPhone, will be going back to Apple when the next iPhone is out.

Just in the interest of balance…I have had an S3, S4 and now have an S5. wouldnt swap it for any other phone at all. The reason for my post is that I was reading about an iphone doing the same thing. I dont know if this is applicable to you but using any other charger rather than the official product charger can cause over charging hence the burning. Always use a samsung charger or apple charger rather than a cheap one from ebay etc… where this becomes relevant to us lorry drivers is that most of us over charge them in the truck using 24 vault or using unnoficial chargers bought from service stations. This will also cause problems when plugged in back at home

Its not common, its the issue with lithium ion batteries. Iphones do the same. You’ll find the amount of problems such as this compared to the amount sold is miniscule

Apple, samsung, I’ve a apple phone and it’s ace, but everything costs you money, I’ve got a samsung tablet and music and films can be downloaded direct for nowt! I know which one I’m getting when my contracts up.

Exactly this.

Never had a problem with my S3/Note2/Note3 when using the genuine samsung charger - I think it is 1amp but could be 2 - either way it is fast compared to the older cheaper versions

Bleedin hec mate not good, me other half has got one of them, ive got HTC 8 kin useless battery goes flat all the time, modern phones kin hopeless in one way or other. :unamused:

Had my sam note 2 years .all phones get hot mostly to as said wrong chargers. Another problem is the batteries arnt run flat enough and phones left switched on when over night charging…

I’ve got s4 and never had issues.Again I wouldn’t swop it.Thanks for heads up!

I’ve got an S3 brillaint phone but i wouldn’t leave anything on charge over night.

I’ve just got my new S5 this week, and haven’t used it yet, so I hope this isn’t an inherent Samsung problem.

Ken.

Going by what can see in the photo, it doesn’t look like a battery problem but a charging port/micro usb connector fault as the charging port is at the bottom on a separate pcb from the main board and not connected directly to the battery.
I’ve seen it before on phones/tablets where the pcb/port/cable has been damaged by the phone being dropped with the charger/data cable connected or excessive pressure applied whilst inserting/removing the cable (they are that weak you may not have known you did it) causing a short circuit or failure to charge.
In some cases the cable/connector used for charging has been inadequate (usually cheap non genuine) due to the wires/connections being too thin/poor quality to carry 2 amps and get hot.

This problem isn’t unique to samsung but every device that uses a micro usb connection which in my opinion are not durable enough for daily use, although your issue may be caused by a manufacturing defect given the age I reckon that it will more than likely be caused by the above.
Your phone should still be covered by warranty they will more than likely repair/replace it.
If it’s not covered for any reason and there isn’t further damage, the repair should be cheap and quick as parts are readily available for these phones.

I use a s4 mini had it for a few months and then when it was charging started to get very hot then the phone would not turn on proper. Brought it back to 02 store and was sent to b fixed no issue. Working perfect now

the one in d picture is a usb fault. I would not leave a phone plugged in all night as this could happen with any device that uses a usb plug
