Sainsbury's Sherburn-in-elmet

Right.I know this may upset some folk,maybe including a TN member,but I don’t care.

I had the misfortune of tipping in here tonight, and the story goes thus…

I arrived at 18.20,for an 18.00 booking, with a 26 pallet load of water, which I had brought down from Carlisle, and after being told to put my trailer on bay 123,at the front of the building, and handing in my keys,I settled down in the drivers room, with 3 other lads.

Now bearing in mind there are only 4 of us on the premises,I think that I’ll be gone within the hour.WRONG!!!

One guy had been there since 15.00,and at this time it’s now 19.00,and he still hasn’t got his paperwork back!!! and bearing in mind that I’ve been on the go since 06.00,it’s not looking too good for me to get out, before my hours are up,and as I’m a day man,I’m starting to get concerned.

15.00 man eventually gets his paperwork and goes, and that leaves 3 of us.Eventually,it gets to 20.00,and I remind the office monkey, that my times up at 21.00,and I still have to get back to the depot, (which is just around the corner.) fuel up,and do my paperwork. He then goes onto tell me that they are allocating a 2 hour turnaround per load, and as I didn’t get in until 18.20,it will be 20.20 at the earliest, and they may be rejecting some of the stock. :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

I then proceed to tell him that I will be emptying the cab of my gear, and the unit and trailer will be staying on the bay for the weekend, and I’ll walk back to the depot,to which he tells me that it won’t be happening, and I tell him it will,as I can’t argue with the law, insofar as the amount of hours I am allowed to work.

At 20.25,I get my paperwork,marked unchecked,my keys,and I’m off.At 21.00,I booked off,a full 15 hours after starting.

If this is the way that Sainsbury’s are going about things now, what the ■■■■ are they going to do when it’s busy, and the yard is full?

You have been warned.

Ken.

What I find hardest to understand is that if I turn up at a delivery point and the seal on the box is the same as the paperwork from the supplier, where is the delay. Tip the box, sign the paperwork as received unchecked and then take up any shortage or condition disrepancies with the supplier or box loader and let me get on with the job!

It’s the same everywhere, I once spent 5 hours at Argos Basildon even though I was the only truck there, it being a Sunday. Your time is theirs to waste and that’s the only bit they do efficiently :imp: :imp:

Mackem:
It’s the same everywhere

Now, we need to ask ourselves why this is the case…

Seems to me that it may well be our own fault!! Do we (truckers) treat people in a manner that justifies us being treated like scum of the earth?

I for one try to treat/speak to others with respect, until I’m “imprisoned” at one of these places. then i politely lay the law of the land down as did Quinny. But I’ve seen drivers threaten, swear and shout. So its swings and roundabouts really.

Friday I started at 10:30am and having been to Leyland and asda wigan
friday night, sees me late for my 18:00 at sainsburys stoke, due to the bridge bashing on the M6. I arrived at 19:17 theres only 3 of us on the bays, thinking great Ill be away soon and back in the yard before 10:30 so I can take 9 off and be back on at 07:30. approx every 45 mins they take 1 pallet off :unamused: come 10pm they do a shift change, a couple more turn up and they too are sat waiting, at 10:30 I conceed that my saturday shift is lost, and wander into the GI office to explain that I must be off the premises by 11:30 or Ill have to pull the curtains and take 9. (in reality I knew 11:30 would leave me 2hrs, just enough time in which to get back to Bawtry) but I spun them the tail about closing the curtains
At 11pm theres still no sign of a green light, and Im starting to sweat some, so i wander back in the office, with several polite threats to pull out or close the curtains if I dont get going, I finally get away at 11:35pm and make it back to the yard with 6mins to spare on a 15hr shift

   It Don’t bother me i deal with the OUT not the in. But on the whole the operation is struggling at the moment as 90% are new starters and theres lots of issues with site set up etc. When Maltby closes this week and SOME of the staff transfer across it should hopefully improve things!

Thought you might reply Rich.Hows it going there?

I must admit, after working there in my Somerfield days,it was strange to come through the gates again after all this time, but this time in supplier mode.

I don’t know who the clown in the goods in office was,but to have guys standing there for 4 hours, with a load that contains the same product, defies belief. No wonder 1500 man was fuming. He obviously has no concept of what is involved in transport, but he’s ok,as he will go home after his 8 hours.I can see a lot of frustration looming in the future there, unless they change their way of doing things soon, and not let them develop.

You could do us all a favour, and give them some pointers, and let them know that people are not happy, and find out why, when it’s quiet,it’s taking so long to check a load.

The problem you are going to have,is that, from my information, there are quite a few of the old Kwik Save people within the entire building, and believe me,that’s a bad thing, ask your old man,as we know through experience.

Ken.

not about sainsburys as such but just replying as such to koops message, i worked for stobs for a while and though alot of drivers are decent guys there are a load of complete ■■■■■■■■■ about who don,t care wether they upset depot staff or other drivers just as long as they get there way!! this in my experience was the cause of a lot of delays, basically half a dozen drivers being held up by one arse who wants it done his way or not at all, we had one driver who blocked the access road cos he could,nt get his way this type of attitude is beyond belief, I,m a driver now and no way would i treat site staff the way i was treated by alot of drivers,

:frowning: well i have 100% sympathy for all you guys, but i had a gut full of the treatment by all rdc,s mostly tesco,s. thats why i got out of that side of haulage,
me and the wife were shopping, an she asked if i wanted any headache tablets(other brands are available) it was only then that i realised that i havent
had a headache, for the 3 weeks i have been at my new job,
yes im a driver, still tramping, still on artics, but the company motto is, if it dont get there today, it might tomorrow, its absolutely @@@@@@@ great, we are taking on shortly an my mate is giving up the green to join me,
rdc, whats that then, really disgusting conditions, c,mon give me your ideas what it stands for, ■■?

If you want the warehouse haunting or clearing of rats Bones just send 'em in.There’s somebody else on here who will vouch for their ugliness.

A lot of you guys do give all the blame to the tip points. Now i’m not saying they are blameless, far from it. However, your own ofiice planner is at least equally to blame by sending you into somewhere that is known for slow tips (i.e RDC’s) towards the end of your shifts.

Any TM… (WRONG!.. you’ve got me at it now as well so many of you refer to them as that) “FREIGHT CLERK” should be aware of an “Average” tip time at any regular tip point on any particular day & time.

The point is that a 2hr tip for 26 pallets is completely unacceptable especially when there’s only 3 other vehicles in. I’ve been at Reed Boardall where they’ve tipped a fridge in under 10 minutes. I’ve been to Pallex where they’ll take 20 minutes to get round to starting you but then you’ll be done in 5.

Worst ive had was carrying a full load, 2 pallets for a small cash and carry rest was for Tradeteam.

Drove in one guy getting tipped he had pallets of mixed stuff which had to be split open and checked off took hours. Driver in front of me asks what i have i said just two pallets of Budweiser, he said well will take a few minutes to come off and won’t need to be split to be checked you go on before me because ive got a full load and its all mixed 'll be hours.

No probs thanks mate, unloading staff went crazy wouldn’t allow me to “jump the Q”, even though the driver i was jumping ahead of it was his idea.

I said no probs well i’ll be going then not sitting for another two or three hours waiting to get two pallets off. Loaders are saying well your boss won’t be happy. i said i am sure he will be, he would rather i go deliver 20 pallets than spend all day sitting waiting to deliver two pallets then not be able to deliver 20. He can send the two pallets back out tomorow on a ridged rather than tie up an arctic.

I tried to drive off they have the forklift in front of me saying no you can’t go we need those two pallets. I said well if you need these two pallets why are ****** me about, get them off right now the other driver doesent mind.

I understand these places get busy and loading bay staff prob a stressfull job but sometimes they are just being a-holes for the sake of it.

Was in the same place; Sherburn in Elmet Sainsbury’s on Monday last - 1250 for a 1500 booking. Told by security that there were 3 infront of me (Frozen).

Goods in give me bay 93 doors OPEN. 2 guys either side question why I’m opening doors and open theirs as well. One guy had been in since 1030 with 2 pallets.

Anyway to cut a long story short, the guy with 2 pallets finally gets his paperwork at 1710. 6 hours 40 for 2 pallets. I leave at 1800 without paperwork to go somewhere to park for the night.

To turn this all around, I absolutely love sitting in these RDC’s for hours. With the mob I work for they don’t tell me what I’m doing next so I’m never in a hurry to get anywhere. Furthermore, the boss will never try and get me to go over hours so if it gets close to the wire I will simply pull out or shut curtains.

I was sat in Morrisons Northampton last Monday and managed to watch all of Meet Joe Black (almost 3 hours). Love it, great film, that was just the time to wait for paperwork, which they lost. When the woman came to tell me they had lost it she got as far as the drive axle, turned around and came back with someone else. Perhaps a body guard in case I go nuts? No no, not at all, doll. Gimme your fax number and I’ll call the boss man with it. Great, might even get to watch some Fight Club too!!

:imp: went to this godforsaken place today, got there 0730 for a 0800 booking, round the back to ambient,2 on a bay, place empty!hand in notes, told to back in the empty warehouse,2!flts have me tipped by 0755!stroll into goods in for a quick brew…1100!when i got the paperwork back!all whole pallets, only 10 different lines of goods! dot cotton on the desk says theyre busy! come xmas youll be there all week! :imp:
