Safety in lorry?

The problem with leaving weapons on view Harry, is that they can be used against you, my bat is under the pillow.

Ah no, you see in a truck, a knife is OK but a baseball bat is a mistake. It would be a legitimate defence to say that you sometimes felt hungry in the middle of the night and needed to slice an apple, it would not be a legitimate defence to say that sometimes you woke up in the middle of the night and fancied a game of baseball. Your weapons have to be everyday objects

Yeh you are right, but I also carry a ball in case any awkward questions are asked
A mate of mine used to carry a xl can of hairspray for similar use, if I had to explain reason for having it after using it in anger, having a Ross Kemp hairstyle, I don,t think the law would believe it

I have a little routine of checking ignition off, body interior lights off(rigid truck)radio off and truck is in gear(wont roll in gear if handbreak is knocked off)and doors locked before i turn in for sleep, although i often fall asleep with interior light on and radio on,lol,i also carry a small (probably useless)piece of personal protection,at the end of the day if someone goes to the bother of breaking into a truck at night with the curtians drawn they arent coming in to read you a bedtime story, ive heard of ratchet trapping the doors together from the inside handles,at least it might help waken you if they need to apply more pressure to try and open them,i would advise you get in the routine of double checking the doors are locked as it leaves you very open and vulnerable to all sorts male or female,i often find the safest places are the noisiest and ive slept in places i will never sleep in again, wasnt thinking too well at the time,a very quiet industrial estate is silly,a brick through the window is like an open door you cannot close over,at least if a few trucks or houses are around it might detear would be thieves a bit. Also as good a weapon as any to meet someone in your cab with is a good splash of pepper spray in the eyes and then a baseball bat.

as you might need a torch in the middle of the night a nice large maglite torch is handy to have within arms reach.

Yes, as has been stated before on here, the only thing a Maglite is any good for is hitting people.

:open_mouth: i never thought of that…i thought it would help you to make the sandwiches in the middle of the night.

Yep, Maglite, knife… small fire extinguisher maybe in case the sandwich catches fire…

A spray in the eyes with your perfume should make the stinking low lives smell a bit sweeter eh.

It’s fine using a ratchet strap across the doors until the cab catches fire :stuck_out_tongue:

Don’t worry GG, the gas attacks are few and far between, the murderers are too busy killing their own families or friends.

From worldwide statistics, most murders are committed by someone whom the victim knows, either that or they are honour killings. So if you do not park near home and wear a veil, you should be fairly safe sleeping in your cab.

To the young lady asking about safety well last week travelling Caen-Portsmouth I met an old friend of mine I hadn’t seen in almost 30 years,if I had thought about it I might even thought she had passed away but no Kate at 69 was still trucking UK-Spain.She would probably tell you not to be a silly girl and just get on with it,enjoy the job and relax.69 Hell!!!

You might as well carry a gun. Pepper Spray is a prohibited weapon under The Firearms Act 1968. Minimum 5 year jail term on conviction.

Do people really spend their days worrying about this sort of thing, and arming themselves as a result? I’m not joking when I say I had no idea so many people do this. I’ve slept all over Europe, usually with at least one window open a bit and the doors only locked if I did it without really thinking about it.

So it’s a toasted sandwich that you are making in the dark. Ham and cheese?

been 10 years since my last proper N/O , and before many a times I’ve woken up on Spain with windows open in the morning (usually a Sunday!)
not once in 15 years was i ever robbed, gassed or tampered with… (the vehicle or load!)

Never paid for parking, its a principle thing of having to pay to obey the law.

all bar once, never had a bad nights sleep. apart from on the A12 one night, i had, i guess some kids try to break into my box. I class them as opportunist kids, as had they or I known what was in it then, point A i would not have left the dock just to save an hour in the morning, and point B, they would not have woke me up fighting the container lock.

it was a 40’ box crammed with flat screen HD tv’s and the new nintendo WII consuls which was just released.

never really worried about it , as i dont carry anything of any value to anyone , not unless they have a cow at home & they got deep pockets to carry loose cattle feed with
i think the only target i’d be is for fuel, & as long as they’re quiet , i’ll let them carry on , i dont get paid to fight them off, but should a cab break in occurr i have a length of heavy 1.1/4 inch water pipe to hand, that’ll give the buggers a headache :smiling_imp:

i use it to wedge between the seat & hold the foot brake down to check my brake lights every morning

i don’t think i’ll take my chances fighting them off with a sandwich

Is Kate still on for Insite Transport ?

Gunner…she is driving an 02 Magnum…one without modern luxuries…owned by Insight. She said usually 3 weeks away, don’t think there is much she doesn’t know about Spain.said she’ll not be doing the CPC will call it a day then.

it depends on whether you’re a bit of a dog or not.

I have had the odd night out and am female with no problems tend to park near to where tipping next day so always few others around, never think about what could happen or i would never leave the house

Fileep:
I recall Switchlogic woke one night to find a bloke in his cab nicking his gear.

I shouldn’t let what happened to me worry anyone, it doesn’t worry me.

I don’t worry about it, I just won’t make it easy for some scumbag to help him/herself to my gear/diesel/load whatever it may be. How much of a ballache is it waiting for plod to turn up if you have to involve them for any theft etc|?

There will be a job for me then… or not. Won’t be holding my breath for all these ‘hanging up their keys come Sep 2014’
