oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhh! The manager ( no mark, none descript job title, job for the boys £42 K a year ) trying to DO something. Yawn. Tell 'em to foxtrot oscar. :grimacing:

You need to wear safety glasses delivering to that brenatag mob. Rubber gloves, high vis, steel boots, safety glasses and a hard hat. It’s some bloody carry on.

If your company requires you to wear safety glasses and you have a prescription it’s their responsibility to supply them.
Fairly sure that’s in H&S law.

Wilkos do some safety glasses that are designed to wear over prescription glasses. Bit larger round the lens bit and cover well round the sides. I’ve got some and they are fine, about Ā£2.50 I think and saves a lot of unnecessary hassle.

And of course since you are so adamant and didn’t just hear that around the watercooler at your last RDC, you should have no problem whatsoever giving us a link to that quoted section of the applicable H&S laws.

I wear safety goggles over the top of my glasses when using an angle grinder etc. It is a job sometimes to see clearly because they mist up. Add on ear defenders and a dust mask and the only way to see is to take my hat off.

Screwfix do some nice over-specs for Ā£6.99, high optical quality, and non-scratch coating, fit over my glasses fine, I can wear them for hours, don’t know they’re there. I don’t need them for work as I’m retired, but I’ve just had to shell out nearly 500 quid for new varifocals mainly due to the old ones being covered in tiny scratches and specks of paint just from gardening, decorating and working on motors, making them hard to see through. Seven quid against 500, no brainer.

I had a good google round and this is true, but only if you have to wear them all the time; someone on a construction site for example. A driver who only has to wear them for a few minutes can be issued with over goggles or glasses, but the employer should pay for them like any other PPE.

Over-goggles (or eye shields) are suitable for many environments but shouldn’t be provided to glasses-wearers for long-term use, as they don’t give comfortable vision, due to the effect of light refraction through two sets of lenses.

Quoting a Dutch commercial for profit company doesn’t make it law…

May as well stick to the RDC rumour mill…

The company don’t have to offer prescription safety glasses, they do however have to supply over glasses. If the company supplied ones do not fit over standard glasses, and have to be worn instead of, the op would reasonably be able to either refuse to wear safety glasses, or refuse to refuel the vehicle

Nice try, from your link:

there is no legal guidance for prescription protection goggles.

Again, a commercial company/site. Still no definitive quote…

Shall we stick with RDC rumours?

As I said - There are plenty of quotes available, all saying much the same.

Yup. There is no law that states that a company has to pay for or even supply them. I agree there are best practises, however that is entirely up to the employer.

So the OP has no choice but don his safety goggles over his glasses. As a few have stated you can get safety goggles designed to go over glasses for a pittance, the OP should probably have a word with his line manager if the company issued goggles don’t work for him and see if they can spend a fiver on getting the right ones. Storming of to the optician will get him nowhere.

Did you not read what I wrote? I said the company don’t have to provide prescription glasses

for what possible reasonable reason would you need to wear safety glasses when fuelling up? …just uk garbage…if its required at the beancounter companies, then why dont all filling stations let you fill without wearing them?..surely the same risk of sticking the nozzle in your eye and pulling the trigger? car drivers with petrol also??

The employee does not have to pay for these by law.

i work at a lot of fuel stations on a daily basis and a lot of times when managers have asked me to put my helmet on i have asked the question, ā€œwhat is it that could injure my head that won’t injure the customer or even forecourt staff’s heads?ā€ Usually this shuts them up and they let me get on with my work.

This. Do these managers ā– ā– ā– ā–  about when refuelling their family cars? I can’t understand why fuel tanker drivers wear hi viz and hard hat to deliver fuel, as do the pump maintenance people. Customers pitch up and wear what they like. Total ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– .
I delivered to an archeological dig last week and all the college dropouts were scratching about in hi viz and hard hats. What is so dangerous about trying to look busy in a hole?

Read what I said.
Company supplied can include suitable overgalsses or prescription safety glasses.
Not normal safety glasses over normal glasses as per OP told.
