Safety boots and Jobsworths

I delivered a new unit to a certain RDC the other day. when I got to the gate the Jobsworth in the gatehouse asked me had I got steel toecap boots. I told him jokingly he wouldnt like a kick up, the arse from them, and he refused to let me in because I had spoken to him disrespectfully, he said he wasn,t taking that sort of talk off any young hooligan. He was in his 40s I,m 67, it made my day.hahaha

Driver on our firm got banned from the Tor Works, Shepton Mallet a while back, the reason? He asked the H&S guy why steel toe cap slip on boots and rigger boots are banned, yet give the same protection as lace ups, bloke couldn’t give him a straight answer and when pressed said “because I say so” and banned him :unamused:

I find these stories …interesting but no-one ever completes the tale.

OK, the useless prat in the gatehouse wouldn’t let you in. What did you do?

(There are other, very helpful…security people, it’s just the prats who spoil it.)

Did you leave? Did you stay put, blocking the gate until he saw sense?

Your job was to deliver the unit, he cannot stop you or send you away if your papers are in order.

His manager may take a dim view of his actions, especially if they’re waiting for the vehicle and there’s 10 wagons waiting behind you!

OK.2. The H & S prat banned you from the site. Have you challenged him or the company?

From what you say he didn’t have a leg to stand on, if you were wearing the correct footwear.

Banning for no justifiable reason can be construed as a restriction on trade.

I had a run in with the gateman at Sainsbury’s RDC Basingstoke when I was working for Vitacress. As I pulled up the old englishman asked me how many pallets I had on for Sainsbury’s. I said to him that I didn’t know and his reply was “Don’t you check your lorry before you drive it?” in a real ‘sarcastic jobsworth I’m better than you manner’…to which my reply was “Well actually yes I do. When ever I take charge of a vehicle I do a thorough walk around check and by law I’m required the check the load, not its contents, to make sure its secure. Considering we only deliver watercress and spinach on pallets to Sainsbury’s and everyone else has trays, I think it’ll be pretty obvious as to what produce is destined for your warehouse.”

With that little outburst from me he just looked at me stunned and said “Fair enough drive…ok, well, it’s a one way system…” I think I put him in his place that day :stuck_out_tongue:

   WHY do they give themselves the grief though!?

I’ve only had one who gave me much of a problem sofar, can’t remember what it was all about to be honest but I wasn’t having a good day and I got something along the lines of “that’s no good to me, I think you’ll be going back with it” You know the sort…

“no problem” I smiled, “I can go home earlier now then”
“but what about your drop?” (starting to sound a bit more amienable)
“what about it?” Jangling the keys and opening the cab “they can’t sack me - I’m agency”

I was tipped 10mins later  I guess they needed whatever I had for them :grimacing:

i’m leave the army next month and its people you lads talk about here that i realy worry about .

Well there was one which ran to conclusion that sticks in my memory. It was around 1981/1982 and we were working for a newly formed edible oil refinery in Hull. The plant was being literally built around us as we took crude oil in and took test loads out to customers. The basic deodourising plant was running but due to teething problems there were many delays. Specialist oils were being brought into our yard and transhipped into our tanks for onward delivery to customers. Norman Lewis, H&S Transport and Leo Sorenson were regular visitors on a Saturday morning.

We had 3 regular drops with frying oil, United Biscuits in Grimsby, Ashby De La Zouch and Billingham. One particular day I had returned from Grimsby to load for Billingham. My mate Brian had loaded for Billingham too but had been there over 3 hours, the chemist was not happy with the load, he had to tip it off and put it back through the deodoriser. I was to wait until another batch was ready. Eventually memory suggests it was around 1pm, we were allowed to load and leave with instructions to get there ASAP.

The goods inward mans name was Bob and he was a miserable sod at the best of times, we had joked earlier that he would be even more miserable when we arrived, already being about 7 hours late. Well, we had a good run up through York up the A19 and into Billingham and arrived at the gate around 16.30

The guard on the gate dropped the barrier as he saw us coming up Macklin Avenue. we pulled up, went in and this bloke was adamant we were not going in, we asked him to ring Bob, and he said that Bob was going home and we had to come back at 8am the following day. We explained, begged, cajoled shouted that he should contact someone as these loads were urgent and expected. A snide remark such as “you drivers are all the same, you all say that” was enough for Brian. “Come on Malc, we will come back tomorrow, obviously this prat isn’t going to allow us in.”

We backed out and headed back to Middlesbrough for the night. Brian stopped at the phonebox and called our office, they have told us to come back tomorrow, they are not tipping anything tonight

After a long night on the beer, we headed back in the morning to be met with a welcoming committee of many people in suits, white coats, and hygiene hats. Where have you been? You should have been here last night. Phil (Anglia Oils) told me that you left Hull at around 13.50. Amongst the crowd I spotted Bob, who was trying to get a word in. “I was here until 8pm waiting for you last night!”

Well we were here at 16.30 but were sent away, “who by?” “who did you speak to?” Brian explained that the security guard would not call anyone for us and just told us to come back at 8am, in fact he suggested we were lying when we asked him to contact our new friend & ally which was Bob :stuck_out_tongue:

The crisp factory had lost almost 20 hours of production time and had sent the night shift home, they had sent taxis out looking for us, although as Brian later said. we wouldn’t have come back as the pubs were already open on Cannon Park.

The security guy was replaced by a guarding company, we were given Bobs direct number in the oil room and were even allowed massive staff discounts in the company shop

 The main problem I have actually (don’t take this as racism) Foreigners on the gate - What’s the point in putting someone there, who should tell you where to go, what to do and the site rules - when you can’t understand what they’re saying because they can only just speak english!!?

I went to an m&s rdc down south (can’t remember where) a few weeks back, typical black guy on the gate, wouldn’t get of his arse to talk to me, couldn’t speak english well at all and generally made hard work of it all - luckily another driver (who was a fair bit older than me) managed to hear and understand and translated for me otherwise I’d still be there going “eh, sorry I can’t hear you, what was that…” And to cap it all off it took the numpties 3hours to tip 1 (yes one) pallet :imp:

I got asked to leave a place i was delivering to last week.

Working for a supermarket, one of our supermarkets is in this shopping centre, its underground. Zero room to move around, place was full of trucks. Some guy in a 7.5tonner was on our bay, so i passed the barrier and stoped to see what was happening, if i had moved on would be blocking anyone else trying to get out.

Ran over found the 7.5tonner guy in the back putting on straps he appolgised said he was just leaving, no probs i said. Run back to the truck security guard appears.

SG: RIght move the truck, go to the right

Me: I’m just going on that bay the guy is leaving right now.

SG: I said move to the right

Me: Move where there is no room to go to the right i’m going on that bay on the left

SG: i said move to the right and don’t be cheeky to me

This point 7.5ton driver is in his cab starting his engine. There is no one behind me, even if there was nowhere for them to go if i went to the right.

Me: look he is leaving right now, i,m going on that bay and the only person being cheeky is you

SG: Ive warned you about being cheeky to me, i can get you banned

Me: Look can i go on that bay now, and your the only person being cheeky, you are right in my face for no reason, you are the one being cheeky and aggressive, i’m the one trying to explain the situation

SG: right thats it you are banned, leave now or i’ll call the police

Me: You sure about this, by the way whats your name so i know who to complain about

SG: None of your business leave now

Me: Ok no probs

Left the place, he got someone else to make sure i didnt try get on the bay. Pulled out the place called my depot up. Explained what happend, guy at the depot was like “its our shop desperate for this delivery, its our delivery, its our driver and our £40K of stock, WTF”. I’ll sort this out and call you back.

He calls up site manager of the complex, exact words where F’in security guards not another problem. He would go speak to the guy and to go straight back and drive straight in and onto the bay, the manager would be there when i arrived if not, ignore the security guard until manager arrives.

City centre, traffic, one way systems takes 20mins to get back. Security guard is gone, another security guard couldnt be more pleasent. Never seen the guy again, with a bit of luck he doesent work there anymore.

Looking back i shouldnt have left the place should have stayed called the depot, but couldnt get a reception underground.

Kenny is that the bucanan galleries? what a pain in the arris that place is lol

Yip it was, when i went in our bay is on the left hand side facing you, you need to blind side it onto the bay.

There was a 7.5tonner on our bay, a 3.5tonner across from it. Then to the right had a John Lewis decker, a Tufnels ridged and think it was three vans parked around. John Lewis was just about ready to leave, so if i’d have gone in to the right, would be blocking him in, then i’d have needed to try reverse back up the enterance, and if i had gone in and someone come in behind me everyone would be stuck.

But trying to explain this to this halfwitt was impossible, others had work said should have stuck the head on him or not left, but thought assualt him i’m on the dole (can’t afford that) and this guy wasnt for listening, needed someone higher up to deal with him.

Good thing is don’t think i’ll be getting sent back there which i can live with. Though one good thing is delivering there they dont have enough staff, so always told can’t tip you just now, why don’t you come in get a cheap meal out the canteen, so its not all bad.

can you picture a new start on his first ever shift going in there? I think he would cry and run home to his mum lol

LOL its happend, first time i went there think i did about 6 shunts to get it on the bay, especically with them pillars everywhere, kept on going out to have a look. Was a Daf XF hire motor i had, so no rear windows to look out to help blind siding.

Loader said we would have given you a hand but i know a lot of drivers don’t like that they feel embarressed someone giving them a hand. He then said not bad 16mins the record is 1hr 10mins !

Have sent guys there before who have given up and brought it back to the depot, one guy i know in there did that the first time he went couldnt get it on the bay and brought it back slammed the keys down, said never send me there again. The next day though he felt embarressed and demanded he get the galleries again and he managed it that time.
