If the Government was serious about preventing driving-while-tired, they would introduced legislation to prosecute planners and companies that threaten or in any way coerce drivers into working when they are tired. On returning to Tesco Widnes I was told to do another run. When I said that I had already done a full day and felt too tired the office erupted into derision.

Don’t go any further mate…they aint so they won’t…end of.
We used to have a 12.5 hour maximum working day, then we conformed (read bend over and lube up) euro working hours legislation for the much safer 15 hour day, progress apparently

I remember those days also Juddian, realistic hours paid at 40hours + overtime.
Not only did they bend over, they voted for straight rate right through, or ■■■■■■■■ such as time and 2 bob after 50 hours, in a turkeys vote for Christmas stylee.
It makes me laugh when these guys on here who have done the job for all of 5 minutes come on here when driver’s long hours are discussed, and tell me that
‘‘It’s ALWAYS been like that’’
‘‘It’s the nature of the job’’
‘‘If I don’t like it I’m in the wrong job’’

So where were all the hard ball drivers telling the powers that be that they would not work excessive hours then? Don’t tell me they passed over the lube, bend over, spread their cheeks and asked for more??

how on earth, could you possibly be tired working for a plobbing mob like tesco?..you have to be trolling, and not very well at that.
if you said…i was bored into a catatonic condition due to the brain numbing working conditions, then you would have an excuse, but too tired after a maximum tesco shift just beggers belief.

Cough…cough… Did somebody mention drivers sticking together…
Agreed ROB, i also remember when a bank holiday was paid at double time and a day in Lieu, xmas was paid the same…now they get drivers to start midweek, to cover the weekend for the same money, and no extra for bank holidays cos its part of your working week…how crafty…should be a law that says drivers dont have to work bank holidays…the same as the 15 hour day…progress my arse, listen to drivers on here and facebook, many saying how tired they are, then theres others who say they NEED the 15 hr days to make their money up, the same ones no doubt include their night out money as part of their take home package of £500 a week after working 80 hours…i say 12 on 12 off…extra for running in saturday, extra for bank holidays…like the good old days mate.

You need to ■■■■ on a Fisherman’s friend ND for that cough mate.
I was working as an employed driver in the days prior to when the ridiculous Euro hours came in to being.
Then …I bought my own truck, naively thinking I would make a fortune, like a lamb to the slaughter.
If I still had been an employed driver at that time, I would have been there, end of…believe that or not I aint fussed.
You can not compare the perspective of an o/d with an employed one,.which is what I keep reminding a couple of o/d.s on here when stuff comes up.
I was in my 20s with a young family to feed, and a truck and trailer to pay for, working for subbie rates at first.
It was the 80s so I worked long hours anyway whatever the rules dictated, we all did, but this gave me a passport to do it.

Yeh but apparentlly,.as I said, according to many on here …
''It’s always been like this as it is now, it’s the nature of the job, and you and me Truckyboy, who don’t really like the 15/9…are in the wrong job.
Thing is, there will always be change. Some for beter, some for worse. But change happens, wether we like it or not . And because so many people have so many different perspectives, what it a bad change for one, may be great for another.
Case in point the example above regards starting work mid-week, so that you work the weekend as normal hours. To many that is sacrilege, and a massive downturn in conditions. For me on the other hand, it’s brilliant.
And if you’re tramping, an 11 hour break is plenty, and I dare say a reduced rest is no real hardship, ,but that is totally different for a day driver, who may have a debrief, and a lengthy commute.
Even within a single company different drivers have different jobs/needs/wants and expectations.

This.
I remember those “good old days” well; where the heck does everyone think the long hours culture in transport came from?
Employers wised up to the fact that staff dragged the job out for the first eight hours so that they had the jam on top from doing three or four hours work for half as much again, but no corresponding increase in productivity. If any of us hired , say, a painter and decorator today and were told that they would work Saturday for a higher rate we’d tell them to stuff it and come on Monday for normal rate, but we think it’s okay to expect it from our own paymasters. Ain’t going to happen.
Thing is we (as in the general public) have brought a lot of it on ourselves. We expect supermarkets and petrol stations to be open every day, we order all our stuff from Amazon and Curry’s and want it delivered at the weekend when we’ll be in; but if their staff were paid overtime rates like the old days that simply would not happen, well it would but we wouldn’t pay the premium.
Out of interest, just dragged out some old payslips from the mid 1980’s, when I was rattling around the East Midlands in a Beford TK for a Nightfreight depot. Three quid an hour, time and a half after eight hours daily, in every other Saturday morning, all the hours God sends and I still couldn’t afford to run a bloody car as well as me motorbike. Admittedly parcels has never been the best paid job in the world but I suspect some of us think it was all rivers of gold back in those days. It wasn’t, by a long way.

15hrs then pulling the card to do another 2hrs shunting was nearly a full shift at one place i did a stint with…paid well though…
Max 12hrs on my shift pattern all agreed by the company.
Go over it and all hell breaks loose .

Friken Hillarious again DD as was the one about the Taliban refusing to die in a Premium.
You are in top form lately and since Borris Johnson is now the country’s Top Diplomat would you not think of joining the diplomatic corps yourself??
Plenty needs sorting out but you could start with foreign aid or sommat.
Leaving aside how hard any company has worked you, we must all now cover our own back sides. If you felt tired and not safe to continue, then you should refuse, politely stating why. The buck stops first at the steering wheel attendant. If they want to get rid of you because of it then better to be unemployed then dead or in prison. I would also get the planners name and make a note of it and should you get dismissed drop a line to your local TC. I’m sure the would like to read it.

So clearly the OP’s idea of a day differed from your planner’s but how long a shift had you actually done? I work 11 ish for a supermarket and it’s a walk in the park, 8 on pallet work might break your back.
