S24 Scammell

Interesting number – an S24 Scammel in fact! 6x6 with a ■■■■■■■ engine. Just look at those tyres!

I took the photo in 1984 but regrettably did not keep a detailed record of the full specification.

It was a one-off that went to an open pit copper mine in central Africa. It was supplied with approx 100 ton swan neck low loader and was used to transport excavators and 50 ton capacity dump trucks in and out of the pit when they had broken down.

It did well and we went on to delivery four 6x6 dumpers later.

Apologies for the photo but it is from a polaroid original in my album.

Here’s one that went to the military…

Hi Punchy Dan,

Close, but not quite Carlsberg, sorry Scammell.

Your pic shows a regular Leyland Landtrain 6x4 ( either TL12 or ■■■■■■■ 290) rated at 30 tons gross. It shared a few cab components only with the S24.

The S24 was an altogether different machine and a real Scammell. It was 6x6 and a much heavier machine. Cost about 8 times what the Landtrain did.

Have posted this before on Past, Present etc… Scammell S24 (Q149JKO) Curtis, delivering St Phillips Causeway bridge girder, Barton Hill, Bristol 20.2.1993
