S&K Haulage Barry (south wales)

Hi
Anyone know anything about this company
What they are like to work for
what kind of things they haul
Who they work for
Where they collect and deliver from

Thanks

Used to be ‘skint and knackered’ perhaps not every drivers cup of tea , no show n shine motors , the last few drivers of there’s I’ve spoke to couldn’t speak highly enough of the job . Perhaps one of a handful of Brit firms that go absolutely anywhere still . Last spring I had a small break from the euro stuff and was gonna give em a call only for summert to come up a little closer to home . Give em a ring or go down av a look first hand I know they always welcome driver enquires .

Just search the forum there is plenty of threads to read through

or pm the sarge

You certainly want to know too much about this firm, maybe someone can tell you what they eat for breakfast as well

The three jobs are UK work, Belgium and home at weekends or European tramping away for many weeks with Eastern Europe.
Pay is basic salary plus what your truck earns but they will not tell you how much.
They have modernised some units and trailers as some that i have seen are rusty trailers on their last legs.
They do a lot of Italy.

I could write a comprehensive description of this company , but I will offer a quick description instead. Based in Barry South Wales the company is now run by the son of the original owner who I believe still pokes his nose in so to speak, it’s a no frills company which is not known to pay very well, drivers are paid based on vehicle earnings which are not disclosed to the driver!!! .
They have a large customer base mainly in the South Wales area with a large variety of goods transported to Europe and the UK. running mainly a fleet of Volvos.
Don’t expect any remuneration for delays , breakdowns, week ended or Sunday running , they don’t pay parking fees unless the load is ADR.
The companies Driver turnover is large, but they are willing to take on inexperienced drivers thus many work for the company for this reason, and move on when they have gained enough experience to acquire a job elsewhere. on the positive side the company isn’t known to be pushy or for drivers to exceed their driving hours etc. .
If you want HGV /European experience this could be for you, If you want to earn big money with good working conditions -look elsewhere. :frowning:

Where in europe and single drop or multi drop and what about back loads
How old are the volvos manual or automatic gear boxes

So if your broken down at the road side and you report it to them what happens
If there is a defect with the lorry and you report it to them what happens
If you arrive at your drop on time but are keep weighting 4hrs and you get the receiver to sing for that; do you still get paid for what you call vehicle earnings
If you have a high value load on and are in the UK do they expect you to pay for parking out of your own pocket or are they not bothered where you park
And I take it on that note they dont have SNAP account and is there a night out allowance

What are the office like with answering the phone and dealing with problems

Do most drivers leave or are they sacked

Billy the Kid ,I assumed that my post would have been sufficient to satisfy your curiosity :astonished: . I cannot be specific as I don’t work for them myself but have a couple of friends that do. in short if the vehicle is not earning neither are you (delays /breakdown /parked up etc.). and should your vehicle be in the garage for a service /repairs and not earning neither are you unless they give you another vehicle and load while this is going on. Re parking-The answer is in your question. Night out money - Yes, but very little. Single and Multi drops all over the UK and Europe ( Drivers can opt for UK or EU work ) . Communication - expect to do a lot of Texting (cheaper). Office staff /General organising and such things as paperwork and back loads seems to be well organised . Most of drivers leave of their own accord , you need to do something really stupid to get sacked. Vehicles are of various vintage , the UK trucks being the older ones.
Briefly -as mentioned in my earlier post, if you are someone looking for experience then I would not discourage you from seeking employment with S&K , you will not be rushed, you will drive reasonable Kit and possibly enjoy the job. good luck.

Excuse me if I’m wrong but you sound a bit of a worrier! If you want to do general haulage round Europe you’ll have to get used to the fact is very unpredictable.

Billy, you’ve had some good responses on here. If you can’t get the answers you want on the phone, I wouldn’t travel any distance for an interview mate. Luke (Switchlogic) has made a good point as well.

You strike me as someone that’ been turned down or sacked by them.
As has already been stated all drivers get daily wage regardless plus a bonus based on the truck earnings.
All trucks (not mostly) are volvos, all are in good nick if not the newest on the road.
Night out money is ona par with most other companies and parking can be paid for more than just ADR.
Having talked to many drivers on euro work S&K take home is equal and in many cases higher than a lot ofcompanies out there.
OP, as has been stated, give them a ring and speak to them.

They been going donkeys and can still make euro work pay so they cant be mugs. Although the motors aint flash id imagine a firm like that aint sending old knackers around europe that are always breaking down…
Although euro work isnt as reliant on a driver that can repair any problems and deal with customs etc as it was in the 70s and 80s id imagine it still requires someone who isnt going to want to call volvo out for a blown bulb and panic at the slightest problem.

Hey sarge, whats that you that got a shout on sally traffic this morning buddy,
