Running together

Used to love it in the early days, a convoy of about 10, we all knew each other, all different firms, on a Sunday running down on the CB down to London, and all parking up together for a night out…happy days.
Then later running Europe with a mate together was always good, (unless he was the ‘bad influence’ type  . )

I’ve ran with maybe one or even 2, usually from the same firm a few times since those different days, , but I do try and avoid it nowadays as I like my coffee/bog, or quick power nap stops nowadays,.and I ain’t got CB in anymore.

Point of this thread is this, have you noticed in a lot of cases,.say 2 or so trucks running together tends to be a tad hazardous sometimes?..unlike the old days I mentioned we are all on limiters now.

One instance…, one pulls out to overtake, so his following mate does, then the leading motor pulls in safely, but if there ain’t a great deal of room to pull in behind his mate, , rather than crack on and overtake his mate he’ll.sit alongside his back door waiting for a chance to pull in…thus either slowing down 2 lanes, or causing undertaking, by the truck he tried to pass.
Now I ain’t a complete arse like some, (no doubt some will say 'own fault, lack of judgement etc) so I’ll back off a couple of clicks or so to let him in, if on the straight or downhill, but others don’t or wont depending on how self righteous they are, so the bunching starts, or worse cutting in and pulling out in various ways.
Ok I know it ain’t imperative life or death stuff, but I’ve noticed it many times lately.

Always best with an observant sort of chappie at the back, so the lads ahead were ready for any choice ’ viewings’ :smiling_imp: .

The roads are a bit too crowded now, and with speed limiters speeds too similar for comfortable convoy type running these days, as you allude to when two or three are running together now they often form one really long vehicle instead of individuals.

Tight git! Buy yerself yer own map.

Proper lorry drivers like my self and a certain fridge driver on here have cbs but of course we only use them when stationary

With the demise of CB, I think the having a natter with other drivers,in the traffic and stopping for a brew to say hello, has made the cab rats of today.

Would regular meet with drivers from other firms who were running north on a Sunday, all nattering away on CB, then see the same faces running south, from the north a quick, smokey report for the 66, and Alpha1, maybe stop at Penrith or the Moss, for dinner, Some of these guys are still friends today.

The job has lost a lot of it’s cameradre, you go into some places at night now, sit down with your meal, and talk to the dude who’s sat at the table, and they seem to bolt their food and runaway, well the English guys do, occasionally you get the ex-special guy, but it passes the time.Listerning to there war stories or when they were roadies for kylie minnogue, and went to her hotel room… :open_mouth:

I Had a CB from when they were illegal,… and usually bought off the Paddys on the boat.

When the legal ones came out,.I got a one, but it got to the stage where there were far too many knob heads on it, usually sat at home in their bedrooms winding up truckers :unamused: , so I binned it about 20yrs ago.
I say binned it, it must be still on the attic with my windscreen flags and Dutch clogs. …ok I admit it, I only stopped wearing them last year. but still got the wallet on a chain.  .a la European Chauffeur .

Are CBs illegal now to use whilst driving? Suppose they must be. :unamused:

Ran in…

4,5 and 6 vehicle convoys with ‘Supercalibrefrigologisticsimportexportdavies’ down to Bosnia, Spain and through France a few times.

Always a giggle.

You will be telling me next your a sad ZB with a mondeo & caravan with a ham radio & big mast

It passed the time of day when running with either one of your fellow workmates or a driver/od from another company which being on tippers we often were. Two of our drivers at Tilcon and later STB Transport , both deceased now alas, ran reguarly together from our quarry near Ashbourne to Kent, London or Somerset. Basil ‘Dickie Bow’ McCabe from Wirksworth and Geoff ‘Big Tilly’ Land who lived in Bonsall: Geoff would be rattling away on the CB all the way, Basil used to turn him off to listen to the radio and when he switched his ‘rig’ back on a few hours later Geoff would still be nattering away to him! Jimmy ‘I can shout louder than everyone else’ Banks was another who ran with them. Punchy Dan knows what I am on about, his dad was another we chatted with. They were the best times of my working life. It seems now that drivers rarely even talk to each other, ‘back in the day’ we used to have darts and domino evenings together after work, annual dinner dances, whist drives etc for the wives, where did it all go so wrong?

Licences for CB’s were done away with before I finished 18 years ago.

Pete.

I remember people having CBs and who can forget ‘Rubber Duck’ but surely this has been replaced by mobile phones and ha ds free ? In the same way CDs replaced cassette and 8 track? Just ring them, and chat away?

Big disadvantages with phones is unless you can do conference call, it’s only two people, on da CB it’s unlimited.

Do miss having a chat with all and sundry while sat square wheels, on the slab, and being told nice pair legs in the blue car, or she’s got tomorrow’s washing on display…
And even keep em peeled smokey hunting with a hairdryer on this or that road.

.maybe someone can tell me.if this is true.?

Other week was queing on roundabout at south mimms.
.
Was 2 wide loads with an ■■■■■■…wernt that wide more oversized portacabin things .

My light changed to green. 1st wide load obviously jumped a red light.
I set off and almost ploughed into the 2nd cabin as he basically followed him through . I yelled at the ■■■■■■ driver
And he basically told me to f offf .
Wide escorted loads can’t be separated. We’re allowed to jump red lights as have to keep in convoy
