Running empty in high winds

Well that was interesting. First time getting blown across into another lane in winds. A180 more than M180 because the dual carriageway is more exposed.

Slowed right down to 30 and did the last 3 miles to Grimsby with more care (stress).

The run back will be loaded but shy of parking up, any other words of advice?

if your driving an artic disconect your trailer and just pull farward a coulpe of feet, trator unit wont blow over without the trailer attached. someone will proberly say this is wrong thing to do thow.

Yeah. Parking up is only a temporary measure. Got a spare hour each way on the run, but prefer to get on with it.

Slowing down is how I got through it, although unsure if as I’m doing 20mph in those winds if I should have my hazards on.

Car transporters still flew past at warp speed so clearly they were riveted to the roads

Not sure why a BP tanker thought it would be a good idea to overtake me in the last quarter mile of the A15 to the m180… :astonished:

Depends on how you feel if in doubt park up phone in

As I drive a fridge so have a little weight even when empty have been running north to Scotland most nights has been a bit of a breeze about   did drop spped a little but not that much as going to slow can be just as dengerous yep I would have prob passed you

2 reasons
1.confident driver
2.the shape of a tanker is different to a square box

Yes, but we were about to get onto the dual carriageway? We both did 50 on the DC anyway, so he was only just ahead of me (until I slowed down). :open_mouth: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

If you’re in a curtainsider get them as tight as you can, nothing much more you can do. Drive at the speed you feel comfortable, you do get used to it, eventually, and ignore others speed, you don’t know what they have on board.
Its not normally the constant wind from the side but a big gust, usually when coming out of a sheltered area that is the worst. You will try to fight it, then the gust disappears, leaving you pulling hard into it coupled with existing wind will try to have you over. That’s why you see them tipped on the hard shoulder or in a lane, not blown into the banking.

Zip up your bag, put your phone and wallet in your pocket, Its a bloody nightmare trying to find your gear when its been flung about as your lay on your side

^^^^^this! Also, don’t leave your crash helmet on the bottom bunk - it hurts like a ■■■■■ when it drops 8 feet onto your noggin!!!

I remember many a time years ago pulling curtains back and tying them down with rear doors open in high winds i had it down to a fine art but haven’t done it for years now, not sure it’s a good idea now with the flimsy light weight trailers we have these days maybe that’s why i don’t see mnay do it nowadays.
