Hi we import animal food from Beligium/Germany & we are having trouble with the haulage. We import about 10/12 ton every fortnight plus about 6 ton from uk work per fortnight .What would it cost to run our own wagon? We have our yard where we have in the past had a limited o/l i also have been driving for more years than i care to think about.it is just a idea to solve the problem we have. We have tried 4/5 hauliers they start of great then the late deliviers damaged goods start.we are good & prompt payers but we cannot carry on as it is ,any help with costings woul be great
is that bagged or bulk feed ?
it is all bagged plus some boxes & flat packs at times they load it on standard & euros hope this helps
that would make things easier!
10-12 tonne is a odd amount, could you have larger loads less frequently so you could make up a full load ?
tbh I think the costs of running an 18 tonner for small amounts wouldn’t be economic.
hi we can have larger loads & have in the past had container loads in but two things that dont help are storage of the goods as they have to be kept dry & vermin proof & payment of the goods some of the products can cost as much as £75 a bag (25kgs) so 26t of that would take some finding!we can manage the cash flow better with the smaller loads,i didnt think running a truck would work out cheaper but if it near the mark it would solve a lot of issues, all help is appreciated
So are you thinking of running out EMPTY just to collect your stuff … got to calculate cost as against just paying for 1 way trip … can understand effect of poor transport on expensive product.
To be honest I think you’ll find it very expensive to run your own truck for those volumes, if you could use it for more work such as deliveries to your customers, like builders merchants do than the economics might start stacking up.
I work for a race team and we don’t use our trucks a great deal, I’ve priced our fixed costs as around £150 per day they’re used and then about 6.6p/km for wear and tear. Then there is fuel, ferries, tolls and Wages on top of that. This for artics, but they are all paid for so there isn’t any finance on them.
thanks for the comments,it would be going out m/t apart from a few pallets, the idea of doing some haulage is good but the operaters licence would be resticted to our own goods(because of our location).its a shame we cant find a reliable haulier they must be out there!it is a bit tight getting here but we are good tip no waiting & prompt payment i guess it is the amount thats why we have to wait for it.We are based in kent so if of you know of anyone that might be able to help that would be great. The only thing that we must have that it is picked up on the day it is ready or there abouts &brought to us within 2 days at the moment we wait up to 10 days the next one will be 2/3 days so you end up running short then everything on top of each other & that means more labour costs & customers get fed up waiting for goods.
Average 18 tonner payload 9 ton mark so you would need a 26 toner for your weight
Sent you. A pm aswell
Where abouts are you based?
Sorry, just re-read your last post
What sort of rates have you been paying?
If your read the post he says he is in Kent

Hence the reason I edited my post!!!
Have you got anyone local who also uses the same product (ie- same sized farm) then you could order a full artic load & divide the costs.
I know a manager who works for DSV Transport & he might be interested.
we import specialist foods & are the agents for kent,we tried sharing transport cost but not all people are as straight as they seem & we ended up out of pocket so we go it alone now.I have asked most hauliers for there rates, tried offering the work on web sites & you would be surprised at different rates.we will have to see what the new year brings atb

Sounds a bit like you might have been going for the cheapest quotes rather than choosing a haulier on good repute?
I did that with my house new double glazed windows. 5 years on I wished I’d paid 50% more!
Order 5 - 6 tonne a week as part of an artic trailer groupage load?
