Is there any difference to hook up /dropping of a trailer with no run up ramps fitted to unit.
You’ll just have to drop the air out of the unit, drive under then lift it when you’re under.
Be careful or you will smash your drive axle mudguards to pieces

As said…Drop the suspension then go under and raise it…You’ll ruin your mudguards otherwise…Personally even with run up ramps i drop the suspension…Pet hate of mine messing the ramps up…Even though thats what they are for…

Obviously without pick up ramps you have more chance of stuffing the fifth wheel up the front of the trailer instead of underneath, well if you’re one of these who does it all by mirrors and waits for the tractor to stop you will, whether its stops because the lights are smashed or the back of the cab pushed in or the trailer legs bent back isn’t really of concern to them, just another item on the trail of destruction they leave in their wake.
Similarly if you are one who doesn’t dump the tractor air before disconnecting from a loaded trailer the tractor chassis could come up fast and bash the underside of the trailer, plus the mudwings as said get wrecked, with pick up ramps the lazy useless buggers have less ways of wrecking everything in sight.
The run up ramps on our little CF’s were spec’d wrong resulting in drivers ripping the battery box cover off if you didn’t drop the air out when going under. When hooking up to a mega you have to raise the suspension as soon as the turntable is under the trailer.

Like you I pull tankers now and as we have a very limited lifting area, I’ll always get close and then go have a look, mirrors only and abuse of run up ramps is complacency, and that leads to writing in the defect book!

Even if it’s absolutely chucking it down I have window down and head out watching, don’t feel right just using mirrors… The scania boys at our place seem to leave the trailers sat high?? Even with the arse end jacked right up on my xf it’s still a pain in the arse

I think it was you complaining about Scania drivers leaving trailers high and dry before I started on artics, well when I’m in a Scania now and the trailer is either light or empty I always drop the mid before uncoupling. Since I cab hop on nights I sometimes get the Daf CF’s the shunters use during the day. Anit nothing more annoying than finding a trailer dropped high that you can’t connect to.

Yep they always manage to leave the mid lift up when they drop ours too so thats +3" higher for a kick off, then wind the legs right down solid dropping an empty, well done lads i can’t reach some with an MAN so the Dafs have no chance, we;ve had another few missed pins over the last few weeks, some real expensive serious damage too

It mainly depends on what trailer you pull, with my bulker they is a 5/6 foot between over shooting until you hit the unit’ you’d have to be pretty dumb to do that… Tautliners is a total different ball game which yes you need to be careful.
I always go back on the mirrors but then once I see the units rear mud guards disappear under the trailer then I raise the unit up. Sometimes if I don’t see the trailer rise then I get out and check.

A recent story about my ramps, my fifth wheel was shaped for a lower fifth wheel to accommodate a taller trailer that had a steep rake that needed leveling a bit.
So fifth swapped and air levels got reset, I mentioned the ramps where close to the trailer when coupled up and air leveled. I was assured it was fine…
A week or so later leaving a site that had a dip on the exit with a right turn, I heard a God awful wrenching noise, boom ramps near ripped off, I reversed back uncoupled with legs on rocks to keep it high and I got the sockets out and took the ramps off and skipped them, all now good but christ I had a fright I thought the trailer had fell off the fifth.
