Royal Mail - what's the score?

Looking at class 1 via agency following a brief conversation between my wife and an ex-colleague, other than “needing to be flexible” about shifts what does it entail?

Turn up, empty or loaded?

Drive wherever, trailer swap or wait for unloading/ loading?

Likely waiting for bays or straight in?

Likely hours? Need to push or is it comfortably doable?

Any other useful info?

Recently went after RM work through Manpower at Rochester depot.
Agency was advertising RM rates which are about £20 per hour. They told me I wouldn’t get that rate until I had done 12 weeks and were a bit cagey about what rate I would actually get so told em to forget it.

Dead mans shoes, I was tempted until I saw it was agency. If it was genuine work it’d be advertised on RM website @ those rates…!

Pimpdaddy:

Spot on mate!

Did some RM night runs a few years ago out of Bristol -

Take empty trailer to hub just outside Coventry
Drop trailer in trailer park
Go to traffic office - get told your run & bay number
Go to relevant bay number & hook up to trailer on bay
Await green light, approx 1.30am - so sleep!!
On green, do your run
Run will be to a regional depot - straight trailer swap
Return to your depot with empty trailer

Simples!

Sounds good to me[emoji1][emoji42]

I`ve got a very good mate on there full time, he has been with RM since he was 15, now touching 60 :open_mouth:

All I can say, in all honesty, no wonder stamps are so expensive :unamused:

Its too easy, with actual runs breaking up your day/night shift of eating and sleeping

You get whatever the standard agency rate is beforehand.
Trouble is, on week 11-12 you get dropped before the parity pay kicks in.
Even if Royal Mail pay the agency such as Manpower or Pertemps that full meaty rate - they are NOT obliged to pass it onto their drivers - especially “Johnny come latelys” and “subbies”.

I’ve been unable to get parity pay on agency - and I worked there for over 20 years as full time FFS.
Seems the door was firmly shut behind me when I left.
