Roundabout at scotch corner

Thank goodness for those traffic lights on the roundabout at scotch corner. Traffic would be backing on to the a1 without them especially at 4am in the ■■■■■■■ morning …NOT !!!

Which complete and utter idiot came up with the idea they actually needed traffic lights there FFS ■■?

This traffic lights on roundabouts in general is the biggest waste of time and money going. Only needed in a fraction of cases.

I feel your pain with that one. Maybe they should be only operational at peak times, and I agree they can be a PITA during quiet times. The problem is the same on any large roundabout I Reckon; the bigger the roundabout the faster the speed people travel around it. Couple that to lazy drivers who are too idle to indicate and you have the perfect recipe for carnage.

I have fond memories from late last summer when i was stationary at these lights. A German lady in a hire car appeared from nowhere and t-boned my unit - but enough about my sporadic ■■■ life. :sunglasses:

+1. Instead of traffic lights, they should install speed humps on the roundabout, inbetween the ‘entry’ and ‘exit’ points - this would force (most) drivers to slow down and travel around the RA at a reasonably slow speed, giving other drivers plenty of time to get onto it.

And not those ■■■■■■ half-sized speed humps that you don’t need to slow down for. I’m talking about full size, slow the ■■■■ down or wreck your suspension, speed-humps

You wouldn’t happen to drive a 4x4 would you Chris?

As i’m not quite so keen on the idea, with the car I LIKE to drive!
i.e. I will hunt you, I will find you, and I will give you a stern talking too!

The folk that design these roundabouts with lights probably have Audis or Beemers. Not 44t motors that are just building up momentum before the next set turns red. Sets off my urine kettle

Quite like that idea, that is the main problem people going too fast around them. That and the indicator non use.

Have noticed a couple of roundabouts have large hedge fence installed in the central res bit on the approach so you can’t see traffic on the roundabout till you get up to the give way. This has the effect of making you almost come to a stop before entering the roundabout, giving the next entry point time to enter. Think that’s what it’s for anyway.

Speed humps on roundabouts? Never heard anything so silly. They cause more problems than do good and apart from that could you imagine the cost? For what? :unamused:

Aye, it’s not like it’s EVER going to happen :unamused: , but it’d certainly slow people down. As for the cost, it’d be a ■■■■ sight cheaper than traffic lights IMO.

why do the idiots who design these roundabouts put foliage in the middle to block your view ? it would be much safer if you could see what was approaching before you are actually on the roundabout , able to adjust your speed accordingly and keep the traffic flowing . my own opinion is the cycle riding/bmw driving plunkers hate their job and go out of their way to be as awkward as possible , because they can! . dave

Can anyone tell me where Traffic Lights actually Aid in Traffic Flow■■? They cause more traffic than they do ease it.

Roundabouts + Traffic Lights… Sometimes can be a good idea. especially if the a main busy road intersects with a small non busy one eg Willow Tree Roundabout in Yeading. That roundabout could do with traffic lights to allow traffic from Willow Tree Lane to get on the roundabout let alone get out of the lane! you practically have to risk a collision to do that.

Roundabouts on their own with foliage is actually helpful imo… the rule of the roundabout is to give way to vehicles coming from the right, not look at what vehicle is across on the opposite side and decide if you can speed to make it or not by the time the driver gets round.

If carlsberg made roundabouts. …then they had hee haw to do with the cuckoo bridge roundabout at Dumfries. Possibly the worst roundabout. …in the worrrrrld

Said it loads why have traffic lights on roundabouts do people not know how to drive them or something

Could take roundabout out instal a junction with lights cheaper in the long run

When the light were out on the roundabout at Heworth ( Felling by pass ) it worked much better even in rush hour & yep it can get backed up for those that know it but they repaired them

No forward planing but any of these idiots in the office

Actually I know of quite a few roundabouts where having priority only means traffic gets trapped in one of the entrances because another stream of traffic comes through thick and fast and doesn’t have anything holding up its entrance. Traffic lights would rebalance things very well. On some it’s just a free-for-all where people jump out because they don’t see any gap in the traffic appearing any time soon - the Lombard roundabout on the A23 and A236 near Croydon being one of the worst examples. Perhaps they don’t need the lights on all and every day, though (which may be the case at Scotch Corner).

the roundabout in question, scotch corner, is suffering due to the roadworks ongoing, and will be for another year or so. Monday heading north I got stopped at the catterick turn off all due to a combination of, single line of traffic leaving the a1m for the a66, vehicles not using both available lanes, hgvs not allowed in outside lane in roadworks due to weight restriction, they do this because the available road space is the same as it’s always been, only changing it to a width restriction when they falsely narrow the road by painting white lines where they aren’t needed.
Yes I do this run regularly, and yes, it does tend to boil my urine. 12 miles of restrictions both ways when they’re not required for nine of them does tend to grate.
