I have been having some friendly banter with another driver about doing a trip from Rotherham, South Yorkshire S61 1LZ to St Theodores Way , Brynmenyn, Bridgend South Wales CF32 to Capel Hendre Ind Est, Ammanford, South Wales SA18 3SJ & back to Rotherham .I said I though that it would be tight to do it in the day with it being a near 500 mile round trip & he said it was a breeze in the day . Any thoughts on this fellow truckers ?
I’m guessing extremely tight and will depend on traffic conditions and luck but would certainly need a 10 hr drive.
No chance. I usually say about 2 hour 45mins to Strensham services on the M5 then you’re looking about 40-50 mins down the M50 and A449 to the M4 then about another 40-50 mins to Swansea so say about an hour to Pont Abraham services at the end of the M4 near Swansea then about 15-20 mins down into Ammonford. That’s me going from Barnsley though and that’s a clear run all the way down the M1 and then the 42 around Birmingham which is very rare. You could go the Heads of The Valley way but there’s the roadworks where they are dualing it all.
I have done SA18 Llandeilo to Derby in 4 & half hours a few years ago and that was pushing it and that was via A40 A449 to M50 M5 M42 A42 M1 AND A52 in to Derby
Same as lads at our place who said they could do Barnsley to Catrine in Ayrshire and back in a 10 hour drive. Yeah that’s doing flat out on the A75 and on the limiter where you can up the A76 through Sanquar and what not which is uphill and down Dale. This is with 52 pallets of glass on
Only way you could do it is by braking the speed limit hopping not to get a pull and then pulling you’re card at the barrier in our yard

500 miles @ 56mph ., Ya got 60 miles or 56 minutes delay time to play with… if me sums right

I would hazard a guess that to average 56 mph is nigh on impossible ?

You’ve missed out Bridgend. …

If top speed is 56mph, you’ll never average 56mph, more like 52.
However, then take into consideration the slowing down/speeding up at roundabouts, junctions, ■■■■■ drivers that get in the way.
V tight.
I work on a 42-45 mph average. No more than 420-450 miles on a 10 hr drive

2h 45m from Rotherham? We’re doing it in that from Howden, 45 minutes further up the road from Rotherham including crawling through the M1 roadworks in rush hour, hell we’re getting down to Portbury Docks in just over 4hrs. I’ve done Holme on Spalding Moor to Rogerstone on days in one hit with time to spare before plenty of times, just needed to set off at 4am.
Depends on how much time you waste getting to the motorway at Rotherham though. 5 minute drive through the village and I was on NSL A road and 10 minutes later I was on motorway.

There’s hardly any. Once you get on the M1 you’ve not got any junctions to slow down for until Strensham services and there’s only maybe four roundabouts between the M1 at Rotherham and the M4 at Newport.

Easy. I used to do from Dawn Foods just outside of Bridlington to the abbatoir at Stevenston and back in 10.
I swear to god half the drivers on here must only ever do locals.
Get cracked on early doors you’ll walk it, I do from Sandtoft to Cardiff gate services in under 4 1/2 hours via a filling station in Doncaster, obviously need to be on the road 4.30/5ish to miss the traffic
Maybe its because I’ve spent years doing 410-420 miles a day doing each way in under 4.5hrs usually with 15-20 minutes to spare but I can’t see a problem doing any of the runs that’ve been mentioned in this thread.

It warms the cockles of my heart
Just copied this from the UK haulier web site on their HGV route planner ?
Directions from rotherham, south yorkshire to SA18 3SJ, capel hendre, carmarthenshire
Total distance: 233.5 miles (375.4 Km)
Travel Time: 6 hrs 42 mins.
Took this from the RAC route planner for cars which can do 70mph plus, 4 hours 9 mins 245.33 miles.
My thoughts on the subject are that to do 500 miles in 10 hours you have to average 50 mph which in my humble opinion is very difficult in a HGV taking into consideration various 50 mph roadworks in which a lot of the time you are down to 40/45 mph plus the very busy traffic around the M42 / M5 Intersection which will take the average speed down even if you manage to do the majority of the route at 56 mph

Just did this equation on a maths site on google.
How long does it take to travel 500 miles going 55 mph? Answer is 9 hours 55 minutes
I wonder how much time the detour to Bridgend will add to the journey. …
