Gained my Class 2 in June 2015 and have mainly been working in the waste industry driving Skip Lorries,I now feel more confident to step it up a notch.
I applied for a RoRo & A Tipper position in where they are willing to train me up, and would you believe it,I got them both.
RoRo is monthly Pay Tipper is Weekly Pay, I just dont know what to do as I am supposed to start Monday but not sure what my best option is,There both paying the exact same
Ro ro I would go for, I done quite a bit for a while and enjoyed it.
Tipper work is mainly flat out and teararse all day type work.
I’ve only done it as holiday relief for a couple of owner driver mates when I was much younger, and that was enough for me.
You are essentially a tipper when tipping with a RoRo anyway. This time of year is a good time to start, it’ll be quiet for a month or so, pick up around Xmas then quiet until around Easter when it can get a bit hectic through the summer.
Sites can be quite varied, getting a good rapport with site managers early on can make your life a lot easier, but don’t let them take the P, if you allow it then it’ll never end. Negotiate!!!

That was my experience in the day working on the council.I was alternating that only as cover for the regular bulk waste drivers which was a seperate part of the operation and mostly moving plant with a flat Multi Lift ro ro body and we also had a tipper body and a tanker body for it.We also used outside contractors like Drinkwater and AJ Bull on bulk refuse. It was a dead man’s shoes job then whether working direct for the council or outside and I never got the chance to do it regular.
If you’re using the cable type always go back to make sure that the cables haven’t jumped off their guides under the front of body when you’ve taken up the tension and before starting to lift it and that the truck is well aligned with the body whether it’s a hook loader or a cable type.
With me (ex tipper pilot!) it would depend if the tipper work was distance or just local, never done Ro Ro (like skip work I suppose?) but I’m guessing that would be mostly short journeys and many of them?
Done RO-RO skip work with a hook loader for a few days. Common problem is turning up on site and some prat has parked next to the skip or close enough to make it impossible to unload. Another issue is the skip is too full so they overload it then put a lot of crap right next to it.
Apart from that its ok. turn up with an empty drop it anywhere, take the full, drop it out of the way then put the empty one where the full one was and collect the full.
Was not expected to unload anything, although you may have to level out the top if its overloaded for the netting. Another option is to refuse to take it until its level.
But if your just doing compactors you wont even need to worrying about netting; if they overload it all the excess just spills on the floor for them to deal with.

Pete.
Ironically in this area at least tipper work will mostly mean running around more in town and more like skip work in that regard. While bulk waste transfer is a County run operation and therefore County wide and sometimes even inter county regarding running to the respective landfill sites. With even London Boroughs often using land fill sites which are well out of town from memory including Bedfordshire in the case of Kingston at least.
That might be different in more rural parts of the country where the differences might be less or possibly even reversed.
my training in roro was 15 minutes .
pto in cover off, shift, tip it off, or drop skip grab another with the hook .
.it gets very boring after a few weeks of it .
Not done tippers as I’m not into being chased around.so I would say roro may be a better choice .
it’s ■■■■ easy mate

Ah, right. I didn’t know where the op was based. Our class two work years ago involved variety such as (from Derbyshire) tarmac to South Wales, stone into Kent, Essex, London or further afield. Plenty of local stuff as well of course, West Midlands, Staffs, Yorkshire, Lincoln etc. No chasing your tail all day and no way would we get involved with [zb] shifting (muckaway) work!!
Mr rayza man, just ignore my ramblings on my last posts
I obviously did not read your o/p correctly , and I now see what Vid was on about.
I was referring to dock trailer ferry work that I done.
Not skips and all the rest of it, all that is local day work, ugh!,… aka ‘The work of the Devil’ to a seasoned tramper like me.
