Volscadaf,
I can see where you’re coming from but I have to add a bit of a rider-
If a driver was of the type to do a bit of roping and sheeting PROPERLY, it was quite a good indication that he would be of the mindset to do the rest of the job properly, too.
Just a personal observation, of course.

Retired Old ■■■■ you can "see where I am coming from " as I am literally very very close to your neck of the woods !! lol , it was just I was getting a bit bored with the " I can rope and sheet can you ? " brigade , personally I wouldn’t as I am getting to be a bit of a lazy Barsteward these days and long in the tooth so I do understand your " mindset to do the rest of the job properly " comment .

So I surmise that you are driving one of those “girly” curtainsiders that are becoming all the rage? They’ll never catch on you know. Sorry, I meant, “Tha knows”.

,
Driving anything these days not just girly curtainsides Retired Old ■■■■ , as I am on the agencies at the moment lol.

I was just about to say the same.
However, it IS one of those “easy” loads which not many of us Southern Softies were privileged to haul!

OH, DEAR. I knew you’d regret not sending your drivers on my overpriced Roping & Sheeting Course.
At MOTEC.

And here the boys are on the way back from one of their much loved dinnertime refreshment courses
Bit of a list on :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Stilltime collection. These look well roped & sheeted to me (but then again what do I know never having done one  :unamused: )

The number of drivers who claim to be able to rope and sheet is phenomenal. Throw a rope at them though and they think you want as tow.

I folded a TIR cord up for a lad the other week and did it like a rope, I handed it to him by holding one strand and he said “what the eff is that” I said " you’ve obviously never roped before" he said " yes I have"…I mean how could he claim to have roped before yet he didn’t know what I was handing him, absolutely priceless.

Many claim to be able to Sheet and rope but only a few can make a tidy job of it,proper like  Cheers Bewick.

i was sheeting and roping , and sometimes lugging the sheets onto the top of those 8foot reels on end until i was nearly 60 . no wonder i’m knackered now , i feel tired just thinking about it these days . i could always make a tidy job with proper sheets , but when those plastic main sheets came in it was hopeless trying to keep them tight . cheers , dave

Yes mate and do you remember the big tissue reels[dennis will remember]full load on the flat stood up,then drape the flysheet down one side level with the chockrail, secure it tight and neat.Having done that load 9/10 more reels on the roll on top and use body sheets to sheet the load, and rope it securerly.Having done that I think I had 14ton on the trl.
regards dave.

Those were the days when you had use “your noddle” (and all your sheets! ) to cover a load of parent tissue reels.I recall the first time I came into contact with tissue reels,it was when I was at Bradys on the Octopus and trailer and at the time BowaterScott were building their new mill in Barrow.Well prior to them actually starting to make paper at the new mill they got the conversion side of the job up and running and were supplied with big reels from Northfleet mill.So when we were down in London, usually at the end of the week tipping Cellophane on a Dock or wharf we then ran over to Northfleet and loaded parent reels as we had 42ft of deck, waggon and trailer and could get more reels on, which meant we used at least 6 of the 8 sheets we carried(we didn’t use the two steel sheets) first of all hanging a small sheet down the back of the loads on both the Octopus and the trailer then draping a fly sheet down the N/s then covering over from O/s to half way down the N/s with the main sheets, then rope as tight as a drum, wished I’d had a camera in those days.Athersmiths also used their waggon and trailers on the same job and theirs was just as tidy as ours as they took as much pride in the job as Eric (and me) did,but Athersmiths were a lot slower than we were :open_mouth: Cheers Dennis.

I Agree…

A late '76 shot of one of a new batch of Crane Fruehauf 40ft tandems I put onto the K.Fell fleet, shot here in the depot loaded with 20ton of Evap milk out of the Libby factory next door.

An early '80’s shot in the depot at Milnthorpe.a nice load of reels on a 40 footer standing next to a load of 236 new 45gal drums which would have been en-route to Marchon at Whitehaven.

I’m a newbie and would not have the first clue about roping and sheeting. i have a feeling i would get it wrong unrolling the the fly sheet let alone putting it on.

i understand that hardly any of us new guys now how to do it but there aren’t many people out there that use them anymore and even less that would take on a new guy without the first clue so it is a dying breed i guess.

as for dolly knots, WTF are they? what is wrong with a good old snakes wedding to hold a load on?

only kidding fella’. anybody got any info on how to rope and sheet or tie a dolly knot? its interesting to know, just in case! lets try and keep this trade alive by passing on your trade secrets on how to do it!

I have to agree here, I’m a noob without a clue but I would love the chance to be shown how to do it the dare I say “old fashioned way” or to be more PC the right way. Anyone near edinburgh/glasgow willing to teach, I’m willing to learn.

I’m serious, I’m looking for someone within the central scotland area that I can put in a few voulantary hours. Get a bit of info/tuition on the workings of the industry. Thus when I AM offered work as a noob driver, I won’t be wet behind the ears. SO ANYONE WHO COULD USE A SPARE PAIR OF HANDS FOR A FEW HOURS A DAY/WEEK AND DOESN’T MIND ANSWERING QUESTIONS (VERY IMPORTANT) DROP ME A PM

hiya,
That wouldn’t have been the easiest load to do it looks like the sheets
are brand spanking new, so wouldn’t be easy to work with.
thanks harry, long retired.

love it, here is me a NOOB wanting to keep the traditions alive and I have to travel across countries  and pay in silver to learn these skills/tricks of the trade. So if there is anyone closer who doesn’t need paying in silver, drop me a pm.
