roping and sheeting

Norman, the other snags in Devon are that the dykes are too high to be able to see over them so no views and yellow lines everywhere.

Hi there Dennis, just wondered why there was Fell,& Mcguffie involved, did Bewicks buy them out!! crap road goin in from shap side!
Norman croad,Devon…

I used to deliver paper reels to Croppers usualy a 5 00am Tip, It is as you say a bad road, But going in in the dark was better as you could see any oncoming traffic by their lights, Mind you the other road in was not too good either when it was raining the road surface was allways greasey, As far as I know they a still going, Regards Larry.

Yes LEYLAND them there dykes get ever where .i know a certain pub ,well I did know certain pub, where the" dykes" used to walk around with a pint pot, and all the punters [lorry drivers] would put in whatever cash they could afford, and you would get extra curricular, education, in the female anatomy ,very poplar …that made "inroads "in to your journey.

Many moons ago i used to load out of Henry Cook paper Mill,Beetham,Nr Milnthorpe, there was a bloke there,he walked around the trailer & had a look at my sheeting, nothing was said,so he dissappeared!! always got a load to Bristol area,i think Bewick"s had all the work!! Norman Croad,Torquay…

Noo then Norm ! if it was me you mean that walked around your motor, had a look, and then walked away well all I can say is our shunters at the Mill must have sheteted and roped your load ! On the other hand if you were one of Brian Harris’s lads your R & S skills would rank with those at Bewick Transport so still no comment!. The late Brian was a good pal of mine and in later years he did quite a bit of work for us out of the Devon Valley mill as well as back loading woodpulp for us into the mill. Cheers Bewick.

Hi Bewick, yes i worked for Brian Harris back in 1972,wen it was “Harris & Miners”,then in 1982 went owner driver,i used to sub off brian doing work out of Silverton Mill,Hele Mill,Norton Fitzwarren store,Watchet mill, wen i said to you i loaded out of Henry Cooks of Beetham,i loaded & sheeted myself,so i expect the shunter was just checking i put my top skin on,lol,im retired now,ive done my stint of 28 yrs long distance, take care,Norman croad,Torquay…

tipped Newton Abbot once and got my bike out the trailer and headed for bovey tracey.found pottery rd and kept going thinking brian Harris can’t be up here - eventually found it -how he fitted so many wagons in that yard i don’t know. bloody disgrace that the residents bullied him into shutting when he’d been there for 50 odd years

Hiya Norm, I started Bewick Transport with my first motor in 1968 and carried on from there, I bought out McGuffie Tpt in 1974 and then in 1976 I bought the transport interests and depot of Davy & Co (Grange) Ltd which was made up of three local firms (or what was left of them) which were K. Fell & Co, J.L.Ion Ltd. and J.B. Hudson Ltd.,on January 1st 1977 I bought out Henry Cookes own account fleet and finally in 1985 I bought out the own account fleet of J & J Makin Ltd who were Paper manufactures and Converters who had been taken over by J. Bibby & Son PLC the Parent of Henry Cooke. Cheers Dennis.

Hi Jeff, parked on Vallance Rd quite a bit, but when we used to do the pub crawl round Bethnal Green I worked at Solaglas, Bradford, we parked up the ramp could be quite a few of us, happy days. Les.

Oh yes, those pub name’s bring back memories of a time that will never be experienced again :frowning: Park on the ramp between 4pm & 6pm, wash and brush up across the road in the underground toilets, into Gina’s cafe for a faceful of food and then the rest of the night up & down Bethnal Green Rd; One of our lads ‘allegedy’ did the full nasty with ‘Slack Alice’ on stage one Thurs; night in the Van Trompe :open_mouth:  He never denied it but that didn’t make it true :exclamation: Think he had been in the SAS as well

The “Well and Bucket” Bethnell Green, Mike Reed the comedian was a regular on the stage here long before “Eastenders” made him a household name. Definitely the bluest act my sensitive Geordie ears had heard in my sheltered life   :open_mouth: :open_mouth: Ps.
