Hey Dennis, nice gesture,Nice load of waste!! I used to do waste out of Overton, other side of Wishaw, down to Watchet,
Zummset,i had to pay for a waste certifacate off the Devon council to carry waste!Strange i thought!! i used to have 2 nets for waste!! I
used to carry a old flysheet for Bricks,as bricks will cut into yr sheets!!So in total i carried 5 sheets,2 nets, bag of chocks,10 straps,& a big Tool box hidden & fixed to the Rear inside of the trailer Chassis!! i see Watchet Mill has gone now,Norman croad,Devon…
Hi Dennis,where was you based at,was it Milnthorpe Depot,next to vosa,Norman croad,Devon…
I do not think I can say any more about roping and sheeting, however, we all know that it was bloody hard work ,when wet and windy, and many of us who could do it on our own…had to and did… people who chip in with derogatory comments have never done it…
It is the same as containers ,overtook general cargo ships, they will never come back ,the same as roping and sheeting ,died a death ,but I know we ALL if health would let us, could do it just as before no sweat…

You would have fitted in well as you seem like a very decent exponent of the “craft” and have a record to be proud of as well ! Trouble is the old days are gone and these younger lads haven’t a clue how hard the job was pre Curtainsiders so we are ■■■■■■■ into the wind trying to explain to them so it’s best just to quietly remember the old days and only discuss them with those of us who were there and done it and got the “T” shirt ! Cheers Dennis.
You seem to be tarring them all with the same brush Dennis, you are right about some that havent a clue but not all , at the end of the day it was a skill to learn , i have had the scenario of wrapping sheets up in wind and rain picking them up onto my shoulder with water running down my neck and lifting them on the back of the trailer whilst a driver sat with his feet up waiting to tip watched on , but that could be that the driver was either bone idle , ignorant , didn
t know how to help or all three !!! . But if there were no curtainsiders about todays younger drivers would have had to learn , but flats are a rarity so the majority havent had to and that
s not their fault
On another note how would you get away with walking on top of a load now with all this health and safety ■■■■■ about and of course grabbing the sheet and " feeling " your way back down again …

Hi Dennis,where was you based at,was it Milnthorpe Depot,next to vosa,Norman croad,Devon…
Yes Norm the centre of our operation was at Milnthorpe and the depot you speak of was our third one in the village, but Milnthorpe only counted for about 20% of our traffic in later years as we had always had a fair number of outbased motors from the early days and then from the mid 80’s we had a depot in Rochdale and later a warehouse and depot in Irlam and we also had motors down in Hele and a number at Dunstable plus odd ones based in the Midlands, Preston and Garstang. Happy Days cheers Dennis.

Sore point with me when this legislation came in Norm ! Take that load in the shot for instance it wasn’t “waste” but brand new trim off the reels we had delivered into the Rexam plant returning to the Mill but because the word “waste” was used in the description we had to have a UK wide waste carriers licence and I even tried explaining to a Council Wallah once about the clean recyclable paper we hauled and why it’s classification as “waste” was incorrect but the wooden ■■■■■■■ didn’t or wouldn’t understand ! Cheers Dennis.

I new Nelsons very well Norm, an old fashioned family firm now long gone I got my first driver from them who became our first traffic manager and eventually our Operations Director and my right hand man! It was always a “running sore” with “The Queen” or Maureen Ross the owner of Nelsons that me, a 23 year old upstart, nicked one of their best drivers ! It all came about when we both stopped at Les Cooks digs at Falfield on the A38 one Friday night in late '69. I had my 2nd motor on order for Jan '70 so we did the deal and he gave his notice in at Nelsons and there was hell on in Arnside I can tell you ! Nelsons also ran a few Coaches in the day and when they had a right sort out when HGV testing came in they rationalised their operations and they sold the Coaching side to “Chappie Shaw” who as you are aware is now a big outfit called Travellers. They were interesting times as we took a few drivers on from Nelsons, and no! we didn’t poach them they came asking but it was a bit embarrassing at times especially when their Star man “jacked” off their new F88 and came to us on nights and then onto shunting then into the traffic office as assistant traffic manager !Funny old days, you wouldn’t believe the half of it Norm ! Cheers Dennis.
