roping and sheeting

Where was that photo taken Dennis - it looks like the old Athersmiths garage on Hindpool road, now ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’ and yet, it seems too small?

JEO reg - 1964?

John.

Down Duke St at their old garage as far as I know John, that little lad is John Thompson ( his dad was the dark faced 'un !!) JEO192 Octopus,Chassis No 620855 first reg.31/5/62 scrapped 31/12/68 after a very hard life !! Cheers Dennis.

You must have a mind like a computer to remember all that Dennis! We did have a photo of that garage when Dad had it - also some of an earlier garage and vans, down Salthouse, where if I’m not mistaken Ray Steele ran his empire from later. Unfortunately, Dad died in 1976 and my step mother about 3 years ago, and although I’ve been through all the boxes of photos I can find, they seem to have disappeared.

I do have a postcard from 1939, which by coincidence has a small van of his on. I’ll dig it out and add it to the ■■■■■■■■ Companies thread - although of course, were still in Lancashire then!

John.

I always thought that the Big’un lived in Hawke St. and Jackie lived in Bath St.I know it’s a long while ago and the memory isn’t what it was ! :open_mouth: Cheers Dennis.

I’ll bow to your superior knowledge on that one Dennis.

The reg. dates of the Octopus are courtesy of Chris Swindlehurst from Milnthorpe who has a tremendous archive of local firms from years gone by.I suppose I can claim to be an honary Barrovian as I could always get along with them unlike many others I knew who looked on them as “little Scousers”.One bloke I could not get on with was Lol Chorlton,I will say no more !! Cheers Dennis.

Does this meet with you pommy lorry drivers approval lol

Well done DIG,you managed to get the thread back on track with a cracking picture of how a rope and sheeted load should look, with a minor cringe at the unsheeted back end!!!

Aye, no wipers, That a bit odd for a 1945 reg motor, Regards Larry.

Mind you as far as the roping & sheeting goes they are doing it the opposite way to the way I was taught, I allways fastened the front first the pulled the sheets to the back, Of course every driver has his own way of doing it, Regards Larry.

Only one way Larry, the right way as you state ! That looks like it will be a right “bloody lash-up” to me though, pity there wasn’t a shot of the finished article, probably there was but it was that diabolical the editor scrubbed it !! Cheers Dennis.

Here,s an early shot of roping and sheeting I found on the net.

Well it wouldn’t look good would it Dennis, Blackburn, as you admitted yourself any sheeting and roping done south of John O Groats would be fairly mediocre.

Pete.

It was especially mediocre out of Blackburn at times Pete !!although there was pockets of excellence in those far off years, sometimes !! Cheers Dennis.

Spot on there Dave, unless I was running North on the Top Road when ropes were used to stop the sheet from billowing up and cooling the tarmac! Used the rubber seals out of plastic drain pipe connectors as well, jump on them and squash them to get the seal out… No tipper thread to comment on so have to chip my penniesworth in elsewhere.

Pete.
