West German haulage rates used to be controlled and calculated for the benefit of their Railways and every job was payed there and back so if you brought a load back to base you got payed there and back again!! I kid you not!! IIRC in about '91 I calculated that one of our very best rates only scraped into the bottom of the German rate schedule! When this mad rate structure was abolished shortly after, what happened, the Dutchmen and every other Euro haulier swarmed in and cut the rates to ribbons with the result that most of the “featherbedded” German hauliers didn’t know what hit them!!! Cheers Bewick.

Oops Dennis ,still off topic tut tut.
Quite right Vic! I’m going to nominate you for the post of Moderator on this site! A thread must be kept unadulterated and kept on the “straight and narrow” and no deviation must be allowed!!! Well that excludes 99% of the contributors then? The 1% remaining must mean that “carryfast” will have the run of the site and all the threads! How boring! Are you sure you wish to pursue this suggestion any further? Free speech forever!!! Cheers Dennis.

Hi lurpak,
I remember two drivers who hauled out of Reeds with Merc artics in the 80’s,they were Meat Loaf and Bag of Bones on the CB.
I used to chat to them quite a lot.My mate who was a manager there is Neville Kentish who still lives in the Forest as far as I know.
Cheers Dave.

was that trailer loaded with bog rolls on jumbo pallets doubled up (but with the metal tube frame missing)the same thing happened to,i think it was gypsy joe young of CRS transport in the early 80’s,he would’nt have known the frames were missing because at kimberley clark prudhoe the loads were sheeted by shunters, but it looked just like that load when he was sitting in the old rainton services on the a1 southbound one monday morning.it certainly was a talking point in normans that day.

What you on about “glenny”!!! These loads were clamped onto the deck!!! No sissy double pallets or tube frames or whatever!! We hauled '000 of loads,on FLATS,300 miles, Barrow to West Thurrock and this load was the only one we ever lost!! This driver was a (zb) (begins with W) by the way!! They were obviously “amourters” and “bottlers” at KC’s Prudoe!! Pallets and Frames—what sort of a waste of cargo space is that!!This is a shot of a West Thurrock bound load leaving Bowater Scott Barrow, all product,on the deck.bottom to top!!! Oh! and I was the driver and sheeted and roped it as well!! Cheers Bewick.
You were the driver Dennis?
Atkis in the yard and you took a Volvo, oh dear, you know who is going to have fun with that, bloody good job it weren’t a TM or you’d have to go into hiding

We ran up and down to Barrow with whatever motor was available NMM,I kid you not!! I might just as easy have been driving the MK1 150 LXB(which I probably was next day!) I only wish I didn’t have a shot of the Atki pulling a Bowater load!! I’ll have to have another look in the archive, but don’t hold your breath!!! I do re-call that at the time I would take this shot we had ,in fact, just taken delivery of our first F88s!!! Then again I was just as happy running up and down to Barrow with this little “sowing machine” cracking little motor this 150LX steering as easy as if it had power/st. Cheers Dennis. D
Reading earlier in the post on Caperboard I also spent many an hr in there, although Irvine was quite a bit better than the other,One or 2 of you thought it was dodgy to carry but I can tell you Melinate at Jarrow was worse, sometimes you were loading straight off the machine & if it was the rough faced stuff sort of bubbly finish it trapped warm air in between the boards, like carrying a load of Jelly, even normal loads by the time you got a couple of hrs down the road it would start to lean to the nearside, but in them days there was plenty of rounabouts between jarrow & London so when you came off the rounabout you could give it a flick with the steering wheel to straighten it up, of course experience came into it because if you give it to much of a flick it would go the other way
Heres a pic with a low load on but normaly would be higher than this & down the middle of the tralier used to hate carrying it in Tautliners as you couldn`t see what it was doing
Bad pic of load of yams out of teesport for Walthamstow
another pic not sheeted but took pride in being able to look at a pile of steel on the floor & say I`ll have this then that
Seddon 32/4, don’t know who did the Sleeper coversion, RR 220 Eagle(pass the bucket!) Fuller 610,Group axle c/w Crane Fruehauf 40ft trailer, loaded with 20 ton of Libby foods.Last one to-night seeing that the the thread is not exclusively for the “fine art” of Sheeting and Roping! Hows this one,the sheet is invisible but you can still see the ropes!! What kind of camera was used to take this shot I wonder!! Don’t any of you perverts get any ideas!!! Cheers Dennis.

Could’nt have been many hills on that route if it was at 32 t or you would have run out of driving time and you’d have had to put up that old war surplus tent in a lay by for a night out.
But you’ve proved that the sarge is right about something for once.

But some say that those rolled up sheets that they sometimes carried on the cab roof of those old Brit heaps were actually one of those tents which could be ordered as an optional extra and had the added advantage that it was big enough to be used as a sheet too.
