Thanks for the kind comment Gaz much appreciated ! That particular unit was one of a pair I bought on the spur of the moment IIRC and not without a touch of nostalgia either as by this time in 1984 our fleet was mainly Scania with a sprinkling of Volvos  But I’ve got to say in spite of the problems we encountered with some earlier Sed/Atks namely with that poxy Seddon axle these two Sed/Atks were the last UK units to enter the BTS fleet and I will say they gave 100% reliable service ( Rockwell axle  ) That particular shot is of a load of waste solvent and for the S & R police the drums are covered and roped down on a redundant fly sheet one of a number we used for just such loads ! :sunglasses: Cheers Dennis.

Saddlers Transport, Leith always very smart in a maroon and grey livery, each wagon had the name of a bird painted just behind the front corners of the cab roof.“Swift” being one that springs to mind. Forth Haulage Co, Leith had a similar livery but painted blue, they have been connected to Saddlers.

Class job that Buckley’s Atki and trailer some of those Lads from yesteryear knew how to make a good job so I wonder what the “anti fly sheet mob” have to say about it ! Cheers Bewick.

Both top sheets on the Atkinson and the trailer are bottle sheets and not fly sheets Dennis.

Looking at the width of those “top sheets” David what is the difference between a fly sheet and those narrow sheets on the Atki. They don’t look much over 10 ft wide and I recall we had many “fly/bottle” sheets on the Bowater Scott tissue traffic which were about 13 ft wide with a rope stitched all around the edge but we just referred to them as “fly sheets”. It would be interesting to know what the Buckleys motor was carrying ? Cheers Dennis.

Dennis you best ask Spardo what the load was as he was probably the driver    Buzzer

Bottle sheets have integral ropes that secure the load, fly sheets have ties that only secure the fly sheet, they were never designed to secure but to protect the load from getting wet,but then you already knew that!

Can’t be anything but flattered by that remark Buzzer, a really well turned out vehicle. But I’m like Dennis

I’d say your final comment is laughable as what you are suggesting that in the absence of fly sheets on our 150 or so flat platforms the Drivers would be required to carry a needle and thread and go over each main sheet every time they were used.

Laughable you say, I wouldn’t laugh at a driver who looked after his equipment in the proper manner.

Judging by your last comment Spardo I doubt whether you could sheet and rope a single bed never mind a double ! :unamused: You don’t hail from Leatherhead by the way ? do you ?      Bewick

Just demonstrates what a bad judge you are then, doesn’t it? If you disagree with that last comment you refer to, then does that mean that you do not appreciate drivers who take care of their equipment, and furthermore laugh at their efforts. I have more respect for my fellow drivers than you do, obviously.

You never met my Mother Bewick, a Ward Sister/Matron
As a child I was fully sheeted in bed, but the starched fly sheet was on the bottom.
Once I was tucked in (Sheeted Down) that was it till morning - no movement possible.
I guess it was to keep my hands away from my **** :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:
