And that cross seems a bit near the edge to me.

The very same thought occurred to me actually . Wouldn’t take much for that length of rope to end up wrapped around the prop .

Dennis see the Christmas thread got dumped in Bully’s no freedom of speech here then and the banter was mild to say the least, here is a nice example of R&S though, Buzzer

That is a tidy job John so no criticism from me eh! well it is the season of goodwill  but unfortunately not on TN as it seems that the likes of thee and me, being from an now extinct era, are unable to grasp or understand the current PC , HSE & cancel culture world we are now being forced to accept ! and in the words of the great Ian Paisley RIP " Never never never never" And as the craft of S & R is almost extinct I can well imagine that it may be eventually consigned to “Bullys” as it is now classed as highly dangerous by VOSA and I really can’t understand why the death toll as a result of S & R did not run into thousands in the day instead of just a paltry few ! I bet there has been just as many , if not more, accidents involving Curtainsiders in recent years !
Anyway that’s my spiel for the day so I’m off to gather wood in the forest to keep the cave warm now where’s my bear skin and club ? !
Cheers Dennis.

Cheers Dennis.

Indeed, the only workplace accident that I can remember over the last 30 years was when the wind whipped the end of a curtain out of my hand and dislocated a finger.

I know you will believe me when I say that, as soon as I came back from hospital the first job was to stand in the freezing bloody cold with half the Board and all of the Safety Committee to explain what had happened.

When, after 15 minutes of earnest discussion it was my turn to speak, I was asked to explain what had happened, so I said “I was pulling the curtain back when a big wind came up and took it out of my hand all but for one finger which, if I had stood still, would have taken that out of my hand as well.”

The long silence which followed was broken by the start of a discussion as to whether the standard operating procedure (SOP) should be changed to running with the wind to preserve fingers, or standing still, which according to the SOP which had already been made making running a sacking offence, to avoid a transgression of said SOP.

I retired shaking my head in wonderment, the Safety Committee retired confused, while the Directors all retired muttering in Japanese, probably about this sort of thing never happening in Japan. :unamused:

Curtain pullers united !

load of slippery caberboard out of dalcross at inverness, the craibs one is prob a load of paper out of arjo wiggins at stoneywood

Very tidy as always Dennis - the consistent high standard is impressive.
Out of interest, is that an extra fuel tank behind the cab or did you have tipping gear on some units?

Cheers all,

Keith

Hiya Keith,
Thanks for the kind comments about our S & R much appreciated ! We did at all times strive to maintain a high standard of S & R primarily for our own image but secondly for the industry as it was in those far off days before curtainsiders became the norm as lets face it the industry never enjoyed an very impressive image at the best of times through the years !
With regard to the vertical tank at the rear of the 6x2 cab it was indeed a tipping oil tank which I bought new from Harsh IIRC and we adapted it as an additional derv tank which again IIRC held about 25 gal or so or thereabouts. The 3 axle units only had room for a couple of smaller tanks either side which were a bit of a handicap on long distance work. I fitted catwalk tanks of the F88’s& 111’s and also on the F10’s and 81’s which gave us an additional 40 gal or so. Along with tyres, fuel capacity on the units was a passion of mine ! I know I was/am a sad B------d
All the best for 2023
Dennis.

This was a late 70 or an early 71 shot of two 34ft York SL 's loaded with Pedigree Petfoods ex Asfordby Storage parked at Milnthorpe one was destined for Barrow and the other for Workington or Whitehaven not sure which town.

Hope he’s a good map reader. He wouldn’t want to miss a turn and need to make a U-turn!

Dennis I thought you should give your opinion on this roping & sheeting job as you are a bit of an expert, some say it did not need sheeting your views please, Buzzer

From a purely professional perspective you must understand I have studied the shot most carefully and I have concluded that the “dollie” knot at the top of the “load” is far too loose and is , or could be , in imminent danger of coming loose and then the “load” would be shed and would then need specialist “help” to hand bowl them back into place and re rope into place ! If this scenario was to take place there is only one expert I am aware of on TN who would be able to respond to deal with the incident in a timely and efficient manner ------ A Mr H Gill one of our N. East experts :open_mouth: After many years of handling these sort of “loads” much of the experience gained during many years of travelling to and from The Smoke I’m sure the incidence could be dealt with by “H” without the need to have it recorded as an “insecure” load " nothing to see here Officer !! :unamused:

Hiya,
Thank you for your stamp of approval of my R & S capabilities
but when dealing with this type of traffic more your unroping
and desheeting comes into context and I assure you I will try
my best to achieve your high standards, no gloves required.
