Bye bye scum.
well he aint gonna rival mandela
s party any time soon.
Bit of a tragic character really. Just a numpty who was very fortunate to be invited to the blag. All downhill for him thereafter tho, and I don`t believe he was ever at peace with his lot. taking stock, what did we lose here??..
only ever appeared on a quiet news day in the red tops , wont be mentioned again after Friday …
I was 10 years old at the time of the Great Train Robbery, dont know what was great about it.My sympathy was with the driver Mr.Jack Mills just a guy doing his job. The old retired man couldnt drive the loco. as that class had been fitted with a new braking device since he had retired…
I won’t miss another thief in the ground that’s for sure. Having said that, 30 years for robbery! Good grief the average life sentence served these days is 9 years. Ivan always said you can do what you want in this country, just don’t get caught stealing from the government.

Exactly that, I think that’s the only reason the train robbers do attract sympathy from some quarters, even the most “hang 'em and flog 'em” retentionist was shocked at the severity of the sentence. It’s more than stealing from the Government, it’s stealing from the queen and if you have to rob, it’s always better to rob everything a poor person has than a breadcrumb from the table of royalty.

Sheer bl**dy poetry. It`s never been any different, has it?
I’ll not lose any sleep over his death, he only came back so he could get free health care.
It’s not that their sentences were harsh, it’s that others are lenient. The surviving ones still appear moaning and groaning about their treatment. Google them, most carried on with crime after they came out. The clever ones were those who “looked after” the robbers money.

Their biggest crime was embarrassing the British Establishment which made an example of them by giving them a disproportionate sentence that would point out the consequences to anybody from the lower classes planning something similar.
It was the same with the Kray twins, whether you agree with vigilantism or not they made the East End safe, because people knew they would have to answer to the twins. They did not kill anybody outside the criminal fraternity (that arguably may have deserved it) but they also rubbed the Establishment up the wrong way, hence the life sentences that meant life.
Most of them ended up penniless easy come easy go.
Funny realy the train robbers the krays and all the other celebrity villans ended up spending years in tge nick and skint.

Try telling that to the people they robbed or the business owners who were forced to pay protection money to keep their businesses safe.
As far as I’m aware, just like their enemies the Richardons, the Krays made their money from armed robberies and protection rackets, .
Why was Ronnie Biggs so lauded? He was a minor player in the robbery, all he had to do was recruit a train driver and the one he brought along couldn’t drive the engine. I think his prints were amongst the first identified. He sods off abroad, when he runs out of cash and his health fails he’s suddenly keen to come home. I agreed with him being jailed on return, and I say he should’ve stayed there. He never apologised and was proud of what he did so he wasn’t rehabilitated. In that case stay inside and rot.
Thirty years was a proper sentence unlike those of today. ■■■■ Turpin and co were hanged for robbery.
A shame they scrapped the engine, it would’ve made a great tourist attraction on preserved railways. I think Hornby would make a few quid if they modelled it…

I didn’t say otherwise, what I said was it was safer place to live compared to today because of the fear and respect for the twins, fear and respect that the Police could never achieve. There were no muggings or drugs on the streets and a lot of the pubs and clubs would rather pay the Krays, safe in the knowledge that they would not get any hassle from any others as long as the Krays were associated with them. This, like the train robbery, was an embarrassment for the British establishment, hence the sentences, not for the murders of Cornell and McVitie.

Yea Hornby are never slow to spot a business opportunity, they brought this train set out less than three months after I started up.
