Nice looking Romac F12

Hi lads;

I was with Romac in the late 80’s early 90’s. In fact I can’t remember exactly :unamused: but it was around about then. Me and my ‘new’ missus were running from the finger waggers in South Wales so we decided to sign up with Romac working out of Dunkirk picking up trailers which were shipped out to us. We were away 4-6 weeks at a time.

Spent many a bendy saturday afternoon in the red lion.

I started in an old A reg flat top F12 screamer and quickly got ‘promoted’ to a Volvo Eurotrotter, (my missus hated the cab on this).

Stripped out waiting for groupage and machinery in Madrid

Not long afterwards we moved our kit into that pretty looking left ■■■■■■ above. No tax for UK work so I only ever pulled trailers out of the port at Dunkirk. And I only shipped into blighty when the motor needed service.

Driving the eurotrotter. my missus hated this cab

Gary had not long come off the road and moved into the traffic office (after rolling a bulker just outside Veurne). Johnny Macs daughter was also in the office doing the wages.

On the side of a french motorway changing a shredded super single. Three of us ran bumper to bumper down to Milan. Thats me (Taff) looking like a half sucked refresher. The boy picking up his cuppa is a lad from Brownhills. Deano his name, and he always had his missus tracy with him. Great little body as I remember, although, rules is rules right  ? The boy under the trailer is a north walian called Andy Crook (crooked)

Local boy Andy the bear was yet to hear of the cancer which would ultimately take his life, Ian Mac was no 2 in the work shop to a geezer who’s name escapes me at the moment (frank perhaps?). Baz was Johnny Macs blue eyed boy in the twin sister to the left ■■■■■■ I would ultimately drive. See below…

Tipping animal feed in Switzerland. A few of you could well have been here as this was a regular job. St Gallen I think it was

Anyone who drove an ERF in Romac colours arrived after I left as they were collected and put into service a few weeks before I left to work in Holland on groupage Amsterdam - Malta - Amsterdam for De Haan.

I have a few pictures left which, if I can find them, I hope will add something to this growing collection.

Romac had its knockers but I think there was a certain notoriety to be seen driving in Romacs colours and its only now I can think back fondly to all the weekends I spent in that dusty yard in Richborough.

Happy days for a young cab nut like I was at the time. I’m well and truly subscribed to this thread in the hope some of the other lads turn up so thanks to whoever started it.

Ian - South Wales (Taff)

Can I just remind Harry Monk of this post.

Talking of Sandwich, does anyone remember Paul Coomber?

I used to get dahn Kent every week and one of my regular drops was the laminated glass firm at Sittingbourne.
They also had a place in Sheerness. Coombers used to go in there with a 4 wheel Merc to deliver for them,
but I think this geezer lived on the Island so it was probably a different Coomber.
The glass firm had a few rigid Mercs - boxes and flats, and a nice F10 artic with a Babycham thing in the window.
Do they still have their own fleet?

Are you sure you dont mean Colin Coomber or his late father Brian (aka Pickle) ? They had 4 wheeler mercs and a couple of artics running out of the glass works. They had BS Coomber on the side. Brian was my dads best mate.

the only connection i have with romac is from about 1979. as an owner driver i tipped baled ally scrap ex land rover solihull, somewhere south of antwerp, and bust the oil hose going to the tipper ram. anyway i popped over to billy mon tigney in top of france, and loaded foudry coke for canterbury , got to canterbury late at night, and found the drop.parked upat the drop was one of romacs bulkers. had a look at his tipper pipe and low and behold it was same as mine!. left anote under his wiper saying parked behind you, wake me before you go. next morning i offered him about 20 quid i think to park his unit next to mine, put his tipper pipe on to my ram and tip the coke off, to which he said no probs. sorry cant remember his name or the unit

The £1 a hour had not been long 77/78 so £20 was nearly 20 hours wages :unamused:

thinking about it abit more , it probably was a tenner!!!
