Roffes transport

AndrewG:
Anyone know what became of Roffes transport? Can always remember their poor old Daf 2300’s pulling fully freighted Norfolk line trailers out of Yarmouth.

I drove for them 20 years ago in one of their little DAFs pulling Norfolk Line tilts out of Felixstowe. Not a very good firm to work for but they are still on the go with aged DAF 95’s and even older flat bed trailers - none of the motors are painted in any livery now, they just take the old stickers off and run in the colours the wagon came with when they buy them. They are based at Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire.

Those old Daf 2300 and 2800 got some hammer!

Still going in Sutton Bridge. Run by Mr Roffe, a rather unpleasant chap !

Ha ha, I take it that like me you had to tell him where to shove his lorry!

Known as TWR these days, running FH Globetrotters

TWR is a different roffe from a small village near wisbeach (ive seen there FH16 recently on spalding bypass)

Here’s one that was a bit more up to the job, a 3300.

TW Roffe is a different firm & is based in Sutton Sj James

I remember them my first class 1 job was Norfolk Line back in`89 and there seemed to be plenty of Roffes then on Norfolk Line .Worst job i ever had

Roofes are still going. Mostly steel out of sutton bridge and boston docks. Still run old secondhane unitshanson:

Before the Norwich southern bypass was built everything went round the ring rd past my mothers house. Probably 25years+ now (around 20 yrs old) used to sit on the wall outside at weekends just watching the endless streams of Norfolk Line trailers pulled by hauliers across the country. As i say though the 2300’s used to crawl past even the slight incline causing huge difficulty. Low power now for even a four wheeler i suspect…

when norfolk line moved ports i think that was the end of them

Did they move to Immingham ?

They are based at port sutton bridge and pull rebar & coils off the dock and back load bales of recycled for export. Twr is based about 5 miles away in Sutton at James & do similar work & run similar scrap (trucks) & pay very poor wages.

Just as stev says ,they are based at port sutton bridge ,i would guess they have about 25-30 daf 95xf ,newest i ve seen is an 07 ,if you go past there yard on a weekend it looks like rainbow rentals theres so many different colour xf 's in there ,not one has any logos on ,so you would be hard pressed to know whos they were up the road except for the trailers they pull…

I worked for him and drove a 2300 daf crash box at max weight of 38 ton back and forward out of Yarmouth ,you had to keep them moving.Later I got a 2axle 3300 it had a engine rebuild and went like stink,I am sure it is the one in the picture as I cannot recollect them having another, doing Norfolk line out of dartford, the bridge was being built then. And later I had a Daf 95 minus a lower bumper he cut off them all, doing Lockwood foods all around scotland. After 2 years I was a long server at Roffes ,Had a clean motor, never bumped it,No breakdowns etc.Made the mistake of saying no one day to going over my hrs,so he came out and collected my truck and surprise surprise I was made redundant that very day.2months before we all had either convictions or cautions for hrs offences,I had a caution and stood my ground, you are damned if you do and damned if you don’t.I enjoyed it up to that point.loyalty means nothing there.

One of Roffes motor’s lost a container off the trailer on the motorway near southhampton back in 89/90. Think the driver was female and ran out of Chelmsford in Essex, it could have been the 2800 that used to park on Van Diemans rd around this sort of time. I happend to be stuck in the traffic behind this accident for about 4hrs and remember once road had re-opened i saw Kenfields brand new Pegaso wrecker dragging the stricken box onto the hard shoulder. Pretty sure the people in the car it landed on died, it was nasty one as i recall.
Didnt they run the odd Foden or two in the early 90’s? Chris.

i remember roffes they used to pull for frigo outta kinglynn theyd got the 95 dafs by then

they were still going recently, do a bit of UK flat work for us occasionally - i don’t remember their 2300s but their twin steer 2800s used to get worked hard i recall

Talking of being worked hard, there was a F7 around the Norwich area in the late 80’s and the guy had an air tag axle fitted and had it plated to 38Tonnes!!
Was always an immaculatly turned out truck but with its little 6.7 i imagine was a nightmare to drive. Even saw it at the ministry weighbridge on Jupiter rd once having beet unloaded for being overweight!!!
