Robinsons stockton on tees also b r s trunke

Hi Chris I have only been to Thailand on one of my returns from Sydney once many years have gone by since then ,loved the people my mate lived with a family that owned a house full of girls and he was well looked after. As you know George do you know if he is still alive, I have tried to find out about Bob Johnson but have always came up with he may be dead. Did you know Ann whom was a great friend of the drivers on Robinsons? I do talk to her most weeks by Skype and is very interested in hearing about the drivers and the rest of their working lives. Bill
Ps if you did know her she still is a very nice looking girl,

One photo of the Foden 8 legger artic thread, i thought it was worth a showing on here,(thanks to Bumper)

That is a good photo of a Twin Load, it always seemed a good idea to me but legislation thought differently! :unamused:

hiya,
Seemingly Robinson’s “guvnor” sang the praises of the “half cabs” saying the drivers loved them, but I got a very
different version from a Robinson’s shunter I used to meet at ICI Cricklewood him delivering dry ice me perspex
his words the drivers, shunters and trunkers “hated the bloody things” and as I’ve stated in a previous post i did
move one a few yards and that was plenty, horrible things.

No Bill I was a tramper for British Road Services at their Blackburn Lancashire
depot and lived in that area, no connections with Hoddesden but have lived in
County Durham for about 40 years but did seem to get to a lot of places in the
London area with ICI plastics and came into contact with F Fs lads sometimes,
but the ICI yard at Cricklewood was where i normally got to have a chat with
them, but this was in the 60s so a lot of water has gone under the bridge since
those far off days, but very happy days for me.

Hi Harry,

Thought you just might be the Harry Long from Hoddesdon. I am not sure, but I think this Harry use to work with Chris Everitt who has a bit above.
The bloke you used to meet in ICI was he short, stumpy build, quite a bit of chat, if so that could have been Frank Bowden or Mickey Shambrook. It used to be great taking the ropes off that dry ice, they were frozen and in winter you used to chuck the ropes on the back like lumps of steel rod. Folding the sheets was near impossiable.
After F&F Robinsons I went onto Kipps Transport out of Theobalds Grove Near Waltham Cross Herts. Used to run upto Ruberiod at Granton three times a week, Joyce in the canteen used to make lovely porridge salt not sugar. Mind you that old Ford Transcontinental used to move on a bit 73mph was the top speed and it used to do that most of the time up that A1. Left Kipps and went onto Mitchell Cotts contract with Raines Daires at Crown Road off Southbury Road Enfield ended up in their office, got my RSA\CPC. They closed down and I went with a mate of mine Alex and his friend Sue who ran an agency, Nova Drivers Bureau out of Sawbridgeworth near Harlow Essex. Oct 9th 1990 08-30am whilst broken down on the hard shoulder of the M4 another driver fell asleep at the wheel of his truck and went into the back of me. They found me in some bushes and I am now held together with metal plates. Not been able to work from that day. Still I am lucky, he was killed,-- cut in two pieces as he went through the windscreen.
Now 67 and retired, I get about okay but still get the old aches and pains, well you do don’t yer when you get older.
All the best Harry and keep in touch, sure you have some interesting tales to tell.
Bill Greenwood (Caddyman )

hiya,
Bill the way I end my posts is a bit confusing I should put a comma after the thanks harry,
my name is as the post says Harry Gill the long retired means just that I’m almost (next
month) 76 and I’ve been out of it for a good few years now, sorry for any confusion, the
days of my Cricklewood deliveries would be when I was in my early 30s and the shunter who
I can’t recall his name was a smallish stocky guy who in those days would have been quite a
few years older than me, but I do remember the sheets did resemble “cream crackers” and
he only ever had a part load for them he just used to stamp them into a heap and throw
a rope over them until they thawed out, I remember the ice was lowered through a trapdoor
on the loading bay into a sort of lined box for storage purposes.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hi Vic,
Used to be glad when I got this old beast for my trunk motor RUP 504D she was a goodun. Alright going forward, but trying to keep up in reverse with just the muscle steering used to make you sweat.
Yeah; them days power steering? what was that. They used to call these motors drummer-derries, if you remember Babysham had a fleet of them. That trailer used to cause some problems in tight spots, many a time it’s shown me up.
