Roadsweepers/JetVac Guys

Hi Guys, how easy is it to learn the basics of a roadsweeper/gully/jetvac tanker etc…got interview Monday but I’ve only ever done stuff like this when I was 18 on a tractor and dust suppression type stuff, ive forgotten now how it all worked.

Cheers, any pros & cons ?

I jumped in a roadsweeper once just to move it so I could get my truck out of the workshop, confused the hell outta me when I saw it had a steering wheel and driving controls on both seats :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

New sweepers are all computer controlled and they are quite simple to work as long as you have some understanding of what you’re supposed to be achieving

Easy enough bud.takes about 10 min in a sweeper for the basics, not including emptying it.gully trucks are fine when you work out how to lock the back door and how the blow back works

Just pick it up as you go along , and sup the rest .

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

P.S. Good Luck.

Good luck hope it goes well

You’ll be fine, half an hour at the most to learn the buttons (most of them have pictures or labels) have you driven LHD before?

Gully emptiers are simple beasts when you want to close the back door engine running make sure door and tank seal are both clean.control box on the near side press “exhauster” button will hear pump kick in, handle in front of you marked “door” pull handle towards you door will lower and seal n the tank.press “vacuum” button (for gods sake dont press pressure) when you see vacuum rising there is a small black lever marked “door clamps” push it and you will see the hydraulic clamps go through the slots when they are through stop the exhauster go to the back and CAREFULLY open one of the valves to release the vacuum.
Same procedure to vacuum it to clear gulleys but release the boom off the stay put it down the drain and theres a button on the boom downpipe to operate the boom.
If it doesnt vac up check the valve above the controls that the handle is down its the interconnecting valve from the fresh water tank (front compartment) & waste water (rear).

How did you come across the job? Was it agency or advitised direct ?

A pal of mine, got his first class 2 driving job on a roadsweeper, however what they didn’t tell him at interview was he was on call /rotating shifts for clearing up all R.T.A debris within a given radius including motorways, so he would be called regularly between midnight and 6 am , 5 over 7 (particularly in winter on icy roads) and the money was rubbish also. Just something you might want to bare in mind when applying.

Spot on advice there

easy drove gully vacs and sweepers just take your time like riding a bike practice

if you end up behind a road planner sweeping up ,you will quickly learn
been a long time since i was on one , johnson 600 series i think it was then for Gale plant at Reading ,pretty simple to use ,had a little toggle switch to angle the front of the suction nozzle up when getting into large amounts or bits of breakout ,although some thought it could ■■■■ anything up :unamused:

Cheers everyone, I have felivered a new Volvo Fl to Johnsons before that’s my only left hook driving experience so far, its more how to operate it , I guess actually working on it I will pick it up IF I get the job.

well I found out yesterday I got the job subject to a medical so im well chuffed, training is all provided its a 12 reg Iveco johnsons sweeper, and a Volvo fh 4000 gallon vac tanker so happy days. :sunglasses:

well done happy days

Hi lads

Can anyone tell me what fuel per day does a Scarab Merlin 7.5 Sweeper use on average ? £50/75 maybe ?

Thanks
