Road tolls are coming

As long as myself and my bicycle are free!

No surprise there. No one can afford to pay the current rip off rate of fuel taxation so they use less so the government then wants to rip everyone off even more by charging everyone to use the roads that they’ve already paid for through taxes with the added benefit of a kick back to the tories cronies in big business and Chinese bankers to make a bit of profit on top.

The flaw in their masterplan is that it won’t make any difference to the tax revenues because if people aren’t earning enough to pay the current rip off fuel taxes they also won’t be earning enough to pay for rip off road toll charges instead. :unamused:

So expect to see loads of empty roads just as is often the case now on weekends when people don’t need to use their cars for work and leave them parked on the driveway instead and lots more people being sacked for being late for work because they can’t afford to drive there and have to use the bus instead.

They say they tolls are the answer because they’ll be losing £13bn a year in fuel duty and VED because of the uptake of electric vehicles. But you can be sure if there is a large uptake in electric vehicle they will find a way of taxing them.

Of course nationwide road pricing system would have to use something like ANPR or GPS tracking, what a great way for a govenment to keep an eye on the movements of it’s population.

Like around 80% VAT and duty on domestic electricity :open_mouth: .It’s only the fuel tax issue that makes electric cars seem a good option and if the government can find enough mugs to take them then you can bet they’ll just put loads of tax on electricity supplies because there’s no way that they could realistically stop anyone from using a non dedicated supply if they went for dedicated road fuel taxed charging points.
