Road signs (height restriction)

yesterday i had to fill in a questionaire about bridge strikes andhow to avoid them. learnt the difference between circular and triangular signs. ie it is an offence to go past a circular height restriction if over height but you should not go past a triangular one. I have seen lots of both sorts and always diverted if im close or over the displayed height. Point of the post is why have triangular ones.

Triangles are warnings.
Circles are instructions. (either “you must” or “you must not”) (check out different “one way street” signs)
Rectangles are information.
Octagon is “stop” and inverted triangle “give way” Even if snow covered they are recognisable.

Specifically on heights, you may have a triangle warning you of a low bridge a long way off, but a circle at the point of no return.

Some bridges do have triangle warning just before them, but no circular ones.
Why? I don`t know. Seems silly to me.

Yeah i agree it’s a kind of a needless complication isn’t it really? Just give us the max height, it’s all that’s needed.

A warning or an order will generally both show the height and hitting the bridge will result in the same penalty regardless.

Apparently they talk about the differences in the Highway Code

So there’s a low bridge 19 miles down a particular road. Would you prefer to be restricted from turning into that road?

What if you need to access something 18 miles down that road? Bit pointless restricting so far away isn’t it?

Exactly! So they put a triangular warning sign, then it’s up to you to make a decision. Instead of a circular prohibited sign.

Not if it’s the main road from A to B. You’d want to know that there’s a low bridge you won’t fit under, before you started down that road.
You can then find an alternative route, instead of driving 18 miles, then finding out a mile before it and possibly having to drive 18 miles back.

Circular signs will be on flat soffit bridges - the height is what it is, there’s no variation, so it’s a definite.
Triangular signs will be on arched bridges, bang in the middle you will get the clearance, off to one side you won’t, so these are not definite. It’s more about warning you to negotiate the bridge correctly

You mean that book that everyone knows exists but never gets opened after people pass their tests?

I know the difference as i researched it however why have a triangular sign on the bridge if it is just advisory/warning when they could put a circular one

To advise that a portion of the bridge is at the advertised height.

What’s the world coming to when a lorry driver has to fill in a questionnaire about how to avoid hitting a bridge.
Are standards really that bad. :unamused:

Don’t answer that, I know they are atrocious.

A refresher for everyone comes round pretty fast each time someone manages to hit one from our depot.

Yeah i get what you mean of course it’s good to have a warning, the whole point of this thread is why to complicate the whole thing by having both warning signs & prohibition signs. One or the other should cover everything no? A to B road with either a warning of certain height bridge in 18 miles or prohibition of certain height in 18 miles why does it matter? Tell us the height of the ■■■■■■■ bridge! :imp:

complicate the whole thing

It really ain’t complicated drover, believe me. If it were complicated nobody would know what they were doing.

Oh, wait a minute. I just sussed it.

Yeah not complicated at all, I’ve never had a problem with it, but ask the average stobarts driver :open_mouth:
