Most roads have not changed since the Victorian age. Some date back to the Roman era;Fosse Way ,a perfectly straight road.
If you deliver to the dairies and milk depots in London, they are built on streets that date back to the 18th Century and expect artic deliveries.
Every town, village and city in France has a bypass or ring road to send traffic around.
Or a small toll fee to use a motorway and exit to access an indsutrial area.
The UK sends all traffic through city and town centres.
Bristol is an example of this ,ring road on the Eastern side near Keynsham but nothing on the Western side or a complete loop around the city.Bath again, the stupid Batheaston waste of money bypass that did not solve Bath’s congestion through the center.

I think the plan is to interlink the pot holes to form a bew canal network, then introduce the barge operator cpc.

The UK is 20 to 30 years behind the times.Just look at the nimbies here. They find a rare newt or otter or a frog and it delays new construction projects which lines the pockets of lawyers to fight the tree huggers.
The new HS2 train, the Japenese have had their bullet train for many years and the French have their TGV.
Now in the UK they oppose wind turbines and solar panel farms.Thick as planks.
